Another M5(touring) bites the dust...

Hello
Now it has happened.... Last thursday after changing to summer tires, I started the car and it sounded like a concrete mixer.... Obviously I didn`t drive the car after that.
Took it to a BMW specialist and obviously the timing chain tensioner has quit its day job.... totally slack chain.
The cam prockets were quite worn also.
Now I`m just waiting for the final judgement: Is the engine history , i.e have the valves had a hot date with pistons

The worst part is that I planned to change the tensioner at next service.....

Well well...

Sakke

Thanks.
The current mileage is 190 000kms(~114000miles)
The engine has been reasonably quiet until now....

Hi!!
The valves have not made contact with the pistons. Im having the whole timing chain, tensioner etc. replaced, I think I`ll have the top owerhauled also while I`m at it....

The tensioner had stuck and was compressed when they pulled it out.

Hello Sakke
Please consider the wear on the chain sprockets. They should be changed if the chain is replaced. New chain & old worn sprockets is not good.

That`s the etc. part in my last post. I`m going to have everything , that is possible to change, changed.

Going to post prices, required work and what gets done when I have the facts available.

Whew....great news Sakke. I'm at that point where I will probably get some preventative stuff done at my next 73,000 mile service.

Hi!!
Not a big job, An experienced BMW mechanic does it in half an hour, I`m told. Tensioner costs ~70£.
Do it.
There isn`t a specified mileage for the change of the tensioner, Noisiness is one reason to do it.
