Re: Getrag 280 repair manual, does it exists?

Doesn't look like we have much experience with gearboxes does it?

The only resoureces I have are a little information here: http://bmwe34m5.com/faqs/?theme=1&le...nt_id_select=3

and a trasmission rebuild on the Getrag 265, must be similar to the 280 surely? You can download a .pdf from here: http://www.totalbmwmag.com/HandsOn/TechOct03.PDF

Maybe of some help?

There will be no service / stripping Manual for any of their transmissions.
I would clarify that statement by saying Getrag do not a produce anything for public / service use, though there may be a third party who has produced something.

When a transmission is supplied to an OE vehicle manufacturer, it is a black box sealed item that either performs or does not. If it fails in the Test & development stage it is either modified or another unit from perhaps another manufacturer is used.

I would Contact Getrag direct & get hold of name of a technical specialist within Getrag & email the symptoms of the problem you are encountering.
You may find that they will help you with some documents or advice.

The Getrag 280 series was used in the supercharged 6 cylinder version of the Original DB7 I worked on. This car was notorious for not producing its quoted power output of 330 ps. However the torque ouput was much greater than an M5 & delivered much lower within the rev range.
This Factor caused the 280 to eventually develop a whine on drive & coast down.
When driven above 220 kph for extended periods @ 18 degrees C & above, the bulk oil temp would exceed the manufacturers design recomendations.

Just some background information.
The Transmission is not known for having weak synchronisers either so should not exibit any jumping out of gear on coast down (lifting of the throttle)

Regards
Farrell

Thanks very much for the advice... i will email them.

Does getrag as web site?

Any way, 4th gear doesnt jump on coast down, it used to jump befoor you could heven release the clutch!
But know it doesnt jump any more... you simply cant engage 4th gear from 40km/h to 120km/h and heven above 120km/h it only shifts if you make a very quick movement whit your arm, sometimes quicker the the clutch foot! if you would make it a bit slower... it clashes big time...
