Simon
I have had the same problem on my M540i. It was not the EDCIII struts, as replacement failed to fix the low speed clunks, but rather a combination of top strut mounts, upper control arm bushings and the ball joint on the upper control arms.
I replaced the arms (with new bushings), the top mounts and the stabilizer bar links and it felt like I had a new car up front. And no more clunks!
I got all my parts from BMA (
patrick@bmaparts.com) who landed them in Australia at a far lower cost than the dealer quoted here. If you need part numbers (the same on my M540i for these parts as on your M5) let me know.
Cheers

The motorway ride is very good.
S setting does seem slightly different but mot much?
Is this just the 18s on the LE and hard suspension anyway?
It had new front dampers 25k ago in 02 and new springs this month.. Is the clonking a bushing problem??
