I'm stripping down a 535i and assumed the 2 parts were the same but putting them side by side I can see they're not.

I don't think it would be very hard to modify the standard E32/E34 part to fit and nobody would know, especially if you use one of Eero's excellent repro Wintershal stickers!

Part no 12521724120

I'm in the same boat as the thread starter. My engine bay is in terrific condition overall, yet this cover still managed to crack. You would think that BMW would keep this part available given that it often seems to fail due to age.

Thank you for the detailed comparison pictures of the two parts. If the overall dimensions are an exact match on the upper part of both covers it would certainly seem that material need only be removed from the standard cover to modify it to fit perfectly. Given that it's a replacement part anyway as long as I'm neat with the cuts I don't care if the part number isn't correct - it's better than no cover at all!

Strange indeed, because the one in my pic with the (original) Wintershall sticker is off my M5.
I think the difference at the top of the part is due to the different locations of the coolant reservoir and associated overflow piping on 535i and M5.
As for the hole on the vertical edge, fecknose....
