This car has been such a joy to own and drive, I have to share it. A 1985 MB 190D 2.2, with 5 speed transmission. The power is rated at 72bhp @ 4200rpm, but where I live and work in Colorado drops power 15-21% due to altitude. Compression is 22:1.
It cruises great on the highway at 80-85mph and averages 37 mpg. Cosmetically, while it is in decent condition, rust is prevalent around the jack points. Rust removal/restoration is on the tab for a winter project.
Ive owned it since mid-2007 when I picked it up near Ft Benning, GA. Previous owner bought it new and put only 82k miles on it. It has 165k miles on it now. So far I have replaced one injector line, installed a new radiator, had new o-rings put on the fuel pump and had to put in a new grille insert. I may have to get a new grille insert because destroying it is the only way to open the hood if the interior pull mechanism does not work . . . which is what I discovered yesterday after trying to refill the windshield washer fluid.
That side by side pictures is more proof to me that, not only does the E34 M5 do it so well, but that the 70s, 80s and early 90s cars are BMWs best examples of subtle aggression. I would feel like a boy racer in a new M3, but I feel right at home chirping tires in an old E34.
I have driven these ^^^ extensively when they were first launched.
One would never think its such a small engine when driving, and the consumption is fantastic. Not even close to the claimed figures, but still extremely good.
Picked up a 2002 530i 5spd with sport package the car only has 44K. No sunroof no winter package just bare bones sporty sedan...great car!
Fixed front bumper clip, cup holders, but rims are Fubar at the barrel. Get new valve cover gasket this weekend.

hard to find a sunroof in the UK on e39's, standard steel one on our M5's with glass one being a cheap option. But hardly any other e39's have them here
