ECU, EML, DME control unit and chips etc...

Hi - was wondering if anyone has had similar problems to this (it's gonna be a bit longwinded I'm afraid, no easy way to explain it...) and if so, any advice?

Faulty battery lead to a few times when car had to be jumped. Each time, the EML light came on and the engine repeatedly dropped and raised the revs between about 800 and 1200 rpm (apparently the ECU has to re-adjust/calibrate itself), then after a few miles of driving the EML light would go out. This happened on several occasions with no problems.

Recently the EML light came on again, after a flat battery, but did not go out as usual. Took it to my specialist, he plugged his diagnostic thing in and it said there was a problem with the control unit, but couldn't tell any more than that.

So I took it to a main dealer, who printed some stuff off from the ECU (or DME unit as they call it). It listed 2 faults - one to do with the wiper system apparently ("1 interlock has been activated"). The other was "DME control unit - Memory chip faulty". They said there was nothing they could do other than replace the unit. The offered me a BMW reconditioned one for about 700 quid, but also gave me the no. of an independent ECU specialist who they use to do work for them. I went to see him, and he cleared the memory on my ECU. Went for another drive, came back and the fault had reappeared. He put in a replacement ECU, and I went for a drive with that and when I came back the EML light was still on but the fault had not reappeared on the ECU memory. With this new unit the engine started revving itself as mentioned earlier. So I bought the replacement unit and drove home, hoping the EML light would go out. I've just driven about 45 miles at varying engine speeds and putting my foot to the floor etc, but the EML light is still on. The car has stopped revving itself and drives completely normally.

I am wondering why the light is still on, and what could be causing a problem as I've now got a different ECU......?????

Sposed to be taking the beast to scotland this weekend but now looking like going in the girlfriends corsa... nice.....

Don't want to drive it as the ECU guy said it's rare for the EML light to come on, and it isn't likely to be something menial, and the car might break down at some point....

As an additional point, my ECU that he removed had a replacement chip in it (not original Bosch). Don't know what it was, no markings on it.

Hoping someone can be bothered to read all that and has some suggestions!

Cheers, Jack

Re: ECU, EML, DME control unit and chips etc...

Hi Jack,

Sounds like you may have a dry connection between the ECU and the EML light,

IMHO if the car runs drives ok and the CO are ok then there is no
problem,

Also there seems to be no real logic to the reason why the EML light is going on and off.
I would try to trace the fault back from the EML lamp to the ECU first, you may need a good auto electrician for this or PM me with your UK location,
