As some of you may recall, I bought a ONE OF A KIND, custom designed supercharger (SC) for my E34M5, from Pat Philpot. Pat is well known in the ‘forced induction world’ and European Car Magazine just did a spread on his supercharged and turbocharged E34 5 series and M3.
Pat’s team did a fine job in machining a formidable aluminum bracket to house the Vortec Supercharger and aftermarket alternator, they built an impressive intercooler, aluminum piping, etc. Call this Stage 1. BUT they were thwarted in their plans to install the SC and address engine management issues by an accident – the rear end of their car was demolished, prompting them to sell the SC to me.
When I came into the picture, I found a team to install the SC “kit” in Vancouver, Canada (where I live) and to work on engine management issues. Installing the kit was a major learning experience for all involved, and then came engine management challenges. But we had considerable success as has been kindly and creatively documented in webpages developed by Ken Little in webpages: See,
http://www.bayaream5s.com/Building_T...Intro_P-1.html
In a nutshell, we were able to increase HP from stock 311 to 465 at flywheel, and torque from 268 ft/lbs to around 350. And, these impressive performance gains were achieved with only 3.5psi of ‘boost’, using intercooled air. Imagine the gains associated with a relatively 6psi. Call these accomplishments Stage 2.
Today, however, I asked Rudy Buhler, master BMW technician at CG Motorsports in Vancouver to dismantle the SC and restore my M5 to stock. Why? Part of the answer is that my motivation to complete Stage 3 of the SC process – involving more boost, more power, and additional engine management challenges – has been weakened by my decision to add yet another car to my stable. That car is a Ferrari 355 F1 spider. It’s a rocket, designed to do things my M5 never will, supercharged or not. And so, I decided it’s enough to have one pure adrenalin rocket in the stable. At the same time, I want my original, reliable, beautiful avus blue M5 to be the perfect complement it should be.
If anyone out there is interested in a SC that awaits Stage 3 experimentation on a worthy E34M5, let me know by email at:
