Car Back in Safe Hands - Work in Progress

Morning All,

Thought it's about time I put a new post up - now that my U.K. LE is back in the hands of it's rightful owner !

Since being stolen on 1st June 2004, it spent the best part of the next 7 weeks away from me. The first week in the hands of the thieves. The next 6 with the Police (forensics), and then the local BMW dealer (initially whilst my Insurance Company argued about the remedial work), and then for the work itself, which took 3 weeks to complete.

So I now have my car back - the work done consisted of :-
  1. New Door And Ignition Locks. Re-Programming of the alarm (BMW System III), to remove (uncode) all existing Fobs, and then re-Programme in the replacement & remaining 3 Fobs in my possession. (The Theives still have the 'old' set of keys used to take the car).
  2. New Clutch, Bearing and all ancillaries. - The clutch was on it's way out - and the culprits finished it off completely.
So I now have the car back, curiously running on new-style 2003 BMW Keys and fobs - Nice.

The car was returned looking better than ever - the valet, e.t.c. certainly made me appreciate getting the car back in one piece - weak excuse for pictures here, (I know, but what the hell...) :-

Fortuntately now damage was done to the car whilst it was away, other than the false 'K' Registered Plates that were put on the car. (Mine were left in the boot!).

Car on False plates as recovered (!) :-

So having now got the car back, I am now in the process of doing some long-overdue upgrade work (Feeling somewhat lucky to have it back, too).

Having Spoken to Jonathan (M5 Powered), who now has 'Godlike' Brakes (See his recent thread 1995 brakes ooooh) , I'm going in for the for the same work at the same specialist three weeks' time (New Discs, Pads, Handbrake Kit and Stainless Hoses). So I expect to see a vast improvement when this work is complete - they're pretty bad at the moment.

Finally, the one question I have is on the EDC Set-up. My car has a fault whereby the EDC System switches itself off - "EDC not Active - Owner's Handbook" - is the Check Control message displayed.

This used to be an intermittent fault, now its appears almost every time I drive. The shocks are not leaking - the Main Dealer have checked them. So what else can it be ? Whit the system switched off (which happens most of the time I drive), I can't really tell a noticable difference in the way the car drives and handles - so I wonder how efficiently the whole EDC system is running anyway ?

Incidentally, the car is still under BMW Extended Warranty, will this be covered, or not ? - I'vre seen many recent posts in favour of, and contrary to the EDC System being covered by warranty, or not..

Has anybody got any ideas, or had the same problem?

Hi Terry.

Well chuffed that you got your meat wagon back.

Hopefully the time ahead will be much less eventful.

I know how gutted I was when somebody Keyed my baby all round and mine is only a 14 year old M5 with 139k on the clock so she wasnt perfect to start with...its still gutting when it happens though.

Most of all enjoy every second you spend driving her...I know i do in mine

Mine showed "EDC not Active" after a recent inspection one when the battery was flattened by a stress test. Another possible cause is fraying of the wiring as it goes from under the rear seat to the suspension , usually driver's side. There are a number of posts about this in the E34 section , dating around late 2002.

Re: Car Back in Safe Hands - Work in Progress

Amazing the police managed to recover a stolen car, best of all it doesn't look like it's been anywhere, at least it's saved you a clutch etc, glad to see it back where it belongs although you must be worried about it going awol again. If you get a tracker watch out for power drain, I understand its a common problem with them, although worth tolerating to catch those W$%£ers before they cut it up or whatever. I presume that your car wasn't the one advertised in Exchange and Mart for £9995, it crossed my mind that there's something fishy with that one, as the guy started at £11995, then a week or so later was down to £10995 and now its lost another grand!!,
no photo and a mobile number....if its legit someone should get on to it - he might accept £8500!!
Cheers,
Phil.

Terry,

Yes the problem will either be the wiring under the rear driving seat. If not, it will be a speed sensor for the EDC system. There are three ( I believe ) dotted around the car - one is actually mounted in the spare wheel bay.
I remember Alan Archer had one of his fail a while back which caussed the same problem.

Best

Re: Car Back in Safe Hands - Work in Progress

glad to hear your story has a happy ending

there is a "trick" to twart future attempt to drive off: wire a cuttoff switch to the fuel pump relay that is under the rear seat. you can "hide" the switch anywhere you want.

so even if someone breaks into the car and starts the engine; they will not be able to drive very far.

no anti-theft device is foolproof as the car could be towed onto a trailer.....

anyhow good to have your M5 grin back on your face !!!

I've disconnected the Speed (possibly angle/movement) Sensor in the boot, in order to check if it flags a fault and it does.

Bascially it took 20 seconds or so after the car was started, then it flagged the EDC NOT ACTIVE error and the lights on the switch also went out.

I'm planning on having all the sensors replaced as I feel as though there may be something not quite right with my EDC system, although I do not normally get an error shown.

I don't think they are that expensive, although the module itself will probably be in excess of £300

Good news you got her back Terry

I had a faulty shock on the front a couple of years ago, no leaks so changed them and no warning any more

Re: Car Back in Safe Hands - Work in Progress

Hi Plisken,

If you could let me know where the other sensors are other than the steering wheel and boot that would be apreciated.

I think it would be handy to write a flow chart for 'in the event EDC fails' to make life easier for those new to the car

When you say 300 quid. Is that for all the sensors or just the EDC box under the rear seat?

Best

Jonathan
