Re: Gearbox oil change, question???

from what i understand, there are several gaskets---there are a few on top near the gear selector--there is the rear ouput shaft seal on the backl of the tranny---then there is the rar seal on the engine---i discovered a minor leak this past winter and my mechanic claimed it was from on eof the top seals near the gear selector---the leak continued and a new one developed--this time comng from the rear tranny seal---he dropped the netire tranny and replaced every seal...in fact, he even went in and changed the rear engine seal...

My BMW dealer said that there is no gaskets on the gearbox, they said that it uses some kind of glue or silicone.

No i am confused...

Other question, i have a problem shifting 3º gear, it clashes realy high, i can only shift it quietly at 20km/h and after the oil is hot.

Can use a diferent oil to help slowdown this Problem?

Re: Gearbox oil change, question???

I can confirm there are 3 gaskets as previously discussed. Changed all mine on my previous 1992 M5. All gearbox leaks sorted.

Not sure about your gearbox selection problems etc.

I know my gear change was better after the oil was changed, but it would not cure anything serious.

My 6 speed used lifetime oil as I remember (could be wrong), but changed it anyway. (Orange sticker for definate)

Hello Nuno !

I recently overhauled my "worn to ****" gearbox so i can post some pictures for your understanding.

When your bmw dealer told you that there where no gasgets used he meant the areas where the 3-pieced gearbox housing is bolt together. Only a little silicone based seal mass is used to compensate little roughness. This areas usually do not leak because there is no mechanical stress on it.
I marked this areas yellow.

The red markers show the locations of rubber-type seal rings.

- Output shaft seal (much movment, much wear, common for BIG oil leaks)

- Input shaft seal (same as output, but the gearbox has to be removed to change this part. At the picture my self made housing seperator tool is already bolt on)

- Roller bearing at the lower gearbox shaft (only a seal-cover made of green rubber is located here. It is allready removed in picture. No movement, no wear!)

- gear selector (much movement, much wear. This part is common for failure but it wont come much oil out of it because it is located very high)

When you have problems when changing gears your gearbox allready has mayor problems like worn or destroyed syncros. Parts for this boxes are much, much money and labour will nearly come to the costs of a new one, im sorry.

I paid over 800 EUR for 2 (two!) gears i had to replace. Better look for a good used one.

Re: Gearbox oil change, question???

T.Mueller@ you are really giving me some-headaches as I also have gear-change problems (sometimes) but I have still hopes that instead of the
gearbox the problems are -clutch-related- and the clutch does not release
in full or not quick enough caused by air in the system altern. a defect
depressure-cylinder, cud it not be that -Nuno- has the same problem ???
let me hear the 'good news', please

Re: Gearbox oil change, question???

Thanks... great help, the only problem that i have is shifting 3º gear... it clashes... a lot! only at low speeds it doesnt.

Any way, yesterday i looked over for the sticker and didnt found one...

So, since i was told that the green one is only there i is a very coold country. (is it?)

i assumed that i should have the red/orange one.

I went to my bmw dealer to get the oil,and they said that "castrol automatic TQ Dexron III" is the right one, so i bought 2 liters (good choice? )

The gear box takes 1.25 liters? isnt that low?
