There are several options that are ok.
However, it seems that most of us are using Castrol TWS.

Castrol TWS is good but I had a hard time finding it once so I used Shell Racing 10W60, seems like a good oil.

I think all the BMW dealers have the TWS oil, because this is what they are supposed to put in the E39 M5's.
But the price from the BMW dealer is just too silly

I'd go for Mobil One 15/50 Watt (the new formula is slightly thicker even though its fully synthetic) or Castrol Magnatec 10/40 Watt which I believe is semi-synthetic. Don't use anything less that 10 otherwise you'll develop leaks and the engine's timming chain tensioner won't work efficiently.

The only difference you may find is that the full synthetic oils cause the engine to be more rattley on start-up.

best

Re: Best oil for 88.000 miles 3.6 M5?

I just stick with what the manual says, 15w 40 or 15w 50.

It's written in black and white. I'm not having a go, - far from it, but it says it in the book. I am not meaning you can't read, please don't take this the wrong way, but if thats whats recommended, thats what I put in. .

So I use Castrol Magnatec 15w 40............well happy.

Does the temperature where you live make that much of a difference ? I'm not sure................maybe others know better ?

Mark

If you live in a hot country or go to the track lots then 15/50 or 10/60

Otherwise if you live in blightly...and behave
10/40 is fine and yes go with Castrol Magnatec.

My trusty mecanic said that 5w40 would be ok, but if it was is car hed use castrol 10w60, but that is a racing oil? right? it must be very expensive...

P.s: my local bmw dealer put in the last service... 0w30 castrol... just has i suspected, not suitable...

5 / 40W is still too thin. 10/60W would be fine but personally I'd go for a 15 owing to the age of the engine. This way you minimise oil leaks too!
