E34 3.6L Owners

I saw a 1992 3.6l M5 with 185000km on clock for R62000($10000) and was wondering whether this is a good deal? Has anyone had any real problems with their M5's?
Is there anyway of telling if this car has had a hard life?

Thanks

Re: E34 3.6L Owners

Hi.
Well, at 185.000 Km most part will either have been worn out and changed or you will have to start to repair the the front and rear chock absorbers, the caster bearings (rubber bushes) that keeps the wheels straight when you break, etc, etc. The altenator may be due as well.
The engine may be due for a major overhaul (re-build) but if has been properly maintained, it can last you another 150.000 KM.

Search through this site and you will find all the questions and answers that you can ever want If the question hasn't been raised on this forum, it probably does not exist

If you can find an M5-competent BMW Dealer, have him check out the car.

Very true, I'm up for EDC shock replacement myself! Get ready for 1100 euro each (in the Netherlands)!! I already did most of the other stuff mentioned by ilundber, but I certainly hope I'll be spared on that last one!

Re: E34 3.6L Owners

Prutser,
I had to check the prices in Sweden.
For the 3.6 litre:

Front chock absorbers are 286 euro each
Rear are 544 euro each.
They can be replaced with out changing the coil spring.

As for the 3.8 with the Nürnburg ring feature:

Front chock absorbers are 716 euro each
Rear are 776 euro each.
You have to schange the whole unit (choch absorber and coil spring)

All prices include Swedish VAT (20,5%).

Perehaps you should investigate having them from a dealer abroad?

They're cheaper in the US too, but there's a chance the customs charge you for import taxes when you have it mailed. A workaround could be to go get it yourself, but that certainly spoils the bargain.

Re: E34 3.6L Owners

Having them shipped within the EU-market will not have to pay import taxes.

Re: E34 3.6L Owners

Thanks for the information.I'm not sure it's such a good idea anymore. I do a lot of driving and can't really afford to start putting that kind of money into a car. Maybe in the future i'll look at it again. Are the drivetrains pretty bulletproof on these cars?

Cheers
