Downgrading from EDC shocks?

I noticed that my left front EDC shock absorber started sweating. The oters still look fine, but I'll have take action on the front shocks now. Since the EDC's aren't particularly cheap, has anyone ever "downgraded" to non-EDC shocks? What's the difference in price anyway or should I definately go the extra mile and keep the EDC's?

On another note, it might be worth investigating this rumour that Alfa Romeo sell the same part as the M5 EDC shocks for less £...

Re: Downgrading from EDC shocks?

Moreover, I would be intrigued to find out if an engineering company who specialise in repair of hydraulic dampers can replace the seals...

My guess would be that you ring someone like:

http://www.rs.hydrauliek.nl

And explain that you've got a hydraulic damper from a car's suspension strut and that the seals have failed. See if they can offer any advice!! It can't hurt to ask!

Seems a shame to chuck EDC shocks away just because the seals have gone gay...

Really? Which car are they under then? You have the alfa part number? I'll give 'm a call then.. Here in the Netherlands they're close to 1100 euro each

Re: Downgrading from EDC shocks?

I'm not sure what model they were - perhaps a 164 cloverleaf? I'm sure I must've read it on this forum....

Re: Downgrading from EDC shocks?

Yup. A search of this board for "Alfa" "EDC" turns up that the alfa model suspected to use the same dampers is a Alfa 164 Quadrifoglio (cloverleaf!)

There's also a thread about a chap who's had his EDC shocks reconditioned by a hydraulics specialist - he was in Brazil, but the concept is the same!

Re: Downgrading from EDC shocks?

Ah, well spotted. I'll be very interested to hear what they say. I'm under the impression that replacing the EDC units just because they're leaking is unnecessary, if they can be repaired - but then, I tend to think a bit like that. I welded my friend's broken E36 M3 Evo subframe back together last week.

I only picked that company because they were the first hit for "hydraulic repair" in google.NL - so I'm sure there may be specialists closer to you!
