Feedback/Feel through steering wheel

I may be searching for non-existant faults, but anyway here goes...

I've noticed for the past couple of weeks, that when I grip the steering wheel properly, I feel a lot of what I could possibly describe as viberations through the wheel. Now firstly this feeling is like a wheel imbalance problem, you know how you can get that 60mph shake, only there is no movement from the steering wheel at all, but it feels as though I am feeling every little bump and charictaristic of the road through the wheel, when gripped in this manner.

Perhaps it is nothing, just me stretching the goal posts of perfection, and I do not simply wish to book it into my favorite dealer, when this issue is so slight.

In the past six months I've had the following work carried out up front to cure knocking, vaigness in steering and a steering pull:

EDC Shocker replaced.
n/s o/s Steering Arms replaced.
Alighnement KDS done.
Front drop link and Center Tie Rod replaced.
o/s Lower Wishbone and Upper T/C Arm replaced, also detailed on that same invoice is a Rubber Mount, part No': B31.12.2.226.528

My question here, for them that know, is there much more that can be replaced on the front suspension/steering?
Would it be reasonable to assume that any of the above replaced parts would last less than 6000 miles or "normal" driving?
I'm a little concerned that this is perhaps the very beginnings of a problem. Then again, it may just be as I mentioned above and me shifting the goal posts of perfection?

if your that insistent on replacing everything on your car for perfection issues you can always put some aside for mine aswell..then your m8s on here will be equally as perfect as you

The only thing you haven't mentioned is adjustment of the steering box.

My local dealer have just quoted me at half-an-hour's flat rate labour to adjust the SB. I want to do it, but I just can't get the tools anywhere near the box.

Hi,
sounds like a lot of changes, but have you tried riding on a set of different wheels, especially front wneels, just to see? The M5 runs on some WIDE rims and tyres, and is very sensitive to any rim/tyre imperfections... Often what you take to be steering box play, follows actually from unevenly worn tyres, indented rims, etc... Also, there could be excessive tolerance in the steering column itself, rather than in the steerng box.

Re: Feedback/Feel through steering wheel

Plisken

I have a notable vibrating noise in my front suspension that led to my replacing my front EDCIII shocks at a cost of AUD$1990 each plus another $400 in labour (close to 1800 pounds in total!). But the noise remains. I haven't yet changed all the parts you have had to, but the diagnosis I have now is that the problem is my steering box.

Other threads on similar issues have also pointed to the steering box as the culprit.

In reading about your challenges over the past few months, I have continuously thought that it seems like your steering box is the source of many of your problems. I am not a mechanic, but everything I have read on a number of sites about similar problems and their diagnosis has led me to this conclusion.

Anyway, best of luck with it.

Cheers

Re: Feedback/Feel through steering wheel

Plisken:

As part of the rebuild of my suspension I had my steering box adjusted. The work was just completed. My car has about 50,000 miles and was beginning to have a considerable amount of slop in the steering. After the new components and adjustment everything is like new and steering responds with no more than about a half inch of movement in the steering wheel. All the clunks and sloppy wandering steering are gone.

Having the box adjusted is definitely worth while.
