This is what happens when temptation gets the better of a young mechanic with access to a fast car. It was only in for an M.O.T. He took it out a run - out of working hours - and met a kerb. The rear wheel has also hit the kerb. The garage had taken the front wheel off - to prevent anybody taking the car - it was dumped in a supermarket carpark after the "incident" - further damage done to it to make it look like a theft.
Bust in the boot lid cylinder lock
Ripped out the rear seat arm rest
Rip the face off my stero
Rip a few wires out beneath the steering column
Smash the instrument cluster cover ?
Oh -and the ignition key was still in the garage key cabinet - so easy when you have a set of keys for the garage!
The mechanic in question -after a couple of hours at work the following day - has went into hiding - after confessing to have helped himself to my car - after work - achieving 130mph but then run out of road.
The police took 1 week to fingerprint the vehicle beforew allowing it to be moved - it was dumped approx 200m away from the garage. Never really appreciated how much my tax contributions went towards making such an efficent police force - NOT!!!!!!!!!!!
The mechanic in question seems to have dissapeared !!!
The front wheel has impacted heavily with a kerb - I will post a pic - it is in the boot which I could not open at the time.
The wheel was pushed in at the bottom - with the steering straight - the wheel is at around 45 degrees top to bottom - rather than vertical - it was also pushed back into the wing / inner wing - hence the other visual damage.
My guess at the damage is - for starters :-
Front alloy (8inch) and tyre
Rear alloy (9inch)
Wing and painting
Side skirt
Repair inner wing
New front struts, bottom arms etc - cannot just change 1 strut !
Steering rack ?
Sit her on a jig to see if straight
New lock clyinder / or complete new set
Repairs to boot lid around lock
Reinstate rear arm rest
New instrument cluster
New wiring loom @ steering column - no jointing the old one please !
Steering column shroud
Check for damage to rear axle - do not know what sort of impact that took
And I dare say the list will grow.
Anybody like to hazard a guess at the costing for the above ?
The garage owner thinks that his insurance company will sort it - think not - we all know what insurance companies value these cars at - I cannot see a 1990 model being repaired here.
I will keep you lot posted on any further movements - might be some rich pickings for some M5's needing spares shortly.
