Re: High-mileage E34 M5

It's been for sale in Australia (for around A$25,000) now for a couple of months. With that mileage I imagine it will be difficult to move - particularly since there are other examples with less than 200,000kms for sale for around A$33,000.

Does anyone think it is worth purchasing with that many kms on it? ie at the right price (say A$15,000)??

What are the likely problems that would be faced?

Cheers
David

Re: High-mileage E34 M5

As with any high mileage car you would have to check the suspension, steering, clutch. not sure when the timing chains would have to be replaced?

I would get it compression tested as well if I were considering purchasing it, might give you some idea of cylinder bore wear, difficult to tell from a test drive to know if its usung oil.

But assuming it has been well looked after, its a big engine and high mileage in itself is not so bad, depends if there are other examples also around with less miles etc

But money you save on knocking the seller down for high miles you could end up paying to fix faults.

HTH

That's what I did with mine. It had 182,000 miles on it when I bought it. It has almost 209,000 now. It ended up being a good deal for me because the original owner had already replaced almost all of the expensive parts that go bad, with the exception of the steering box. I got a car in excellent mechanical condition for cheap. Unfortunately he didn't care as much about the cosmetic part so it was kind of rough. I drive it every day while making it look nice a little bit at a time. If it hadn't gone as many miles the parts would probably be pretty much worn out but not replaced yet so I would be stuck replacing all the parts myself. This car looks much better cosmetically than mine did and if it was maintained well would be a good deal if it was cheap enough.
