Sensor Gremlins
Hi y'all.

recently bobbed my beast into a BMW main dealer to plug her into a diagnostics machine.

Aside from all the mechanics there swarming all over her like a rash (you'd think they'd never seen one before??) there was nothing wrong with the car...

however the diagnostics said i had a faulty temperature guage coolant sensor???

what exactly does this do as since i had a new viscous fan fitted the temp guage never goes above half...i am most perplexed...

oh just as an aside one of the mechanics took it for a test drive and reported that the tickover at idle (just below 1000 rpm) was very lumpy and suggested further investigation to find out what was wrong...

he seemed rather taken aback when i suggested to him that all e34 m5's had a lumpy idle and that nobody has managed to get one to idle smoothly

i felt sooo good..thx guys..LOL

Don't let them investigate a lumpy idle, it will cost you £££'s with no improvements. It is good to hear that they were interested in your car, I certainly don't get that at my dealer :p

By-the-way, I had the throttle bodies balanced and it showed an improved idle...

i find the beauty of this board (aside from the fabulous company ) is that if you trawl through the posts for long enuff you always find the answers you're looking for.

i have read on numerous occasions that a lumpy idle is nothing to worry about...so i just tell people its due to a flange sprocket valve..LOL

Highly tuned race derived engine blocks never have a smooth idle. Besides I like it, puts the fear of god into people. Get a few E34 M5's together and you have sounds akin to the desert chase sequence of Mad Max 3
