Fuel gauge reserve light

When I switch the ignition on, the light illuminates (therefore the bulb is working).

However, the light never comes on whilst driving, even when the car runs out of fuel (once!). I have frequently run down to range --- and the light still doesn't come on.

When refilling, I've managed previously to get almost 90L in the tank, indicating that it really was empty.

Any ideas what could be wrong? The range function is more or less perfectly accurate since I configured the OBC consumption readout (I've ended up with 1045).

This reserve light issue has always been the case since I picked up the car.

Re: Fuel gauge reserve light

maybe the sensor inside the fuel tank is not functioning correctly. I have changed my fuel pump and noticed a a fuel level sensor/pickup; but do NOT know if that signals for just the general fuel level as well as reserve status. maybe there is an additional sensor to trigger the reserve light?

Re: Fuel gauge reserve light

Aside of the reserve light, the gauge is functioning correctly - indicating full when full, empty when empty - and somewhere between when half-empty!

What about when half full?

Seriously though, I would assume that it would simply be an additional set of contacts that are made when the float drops below a specific level.
Might simply be a matter of replacing the sender unit.

Speak to your dealer, as I can't imagine it would be too different, if at all from other E34s.

I dont think so..
It is possible to program in the OBC, when the light should come on, so i would guess it works from the same signal as the fuel gauge.

Hello Finn

I hear that when your reserve light comes on you've still got 180 litres in reserve!

I thought the reserve light was static or fixed in that it was possible to adjust or calibrate through the OBC the range, ie so that the "---" shows at roughly the same time as the reserve light.

Finn:

Go on then mate, how do you do that? Sounds different to the OBC consumption correction ratio...

Cheers!

Hehe.. the In-Flight Refueling system is one of the nicer features in my car
But as you know, i have found that it is better to keep it consealed from the eyes of certain police officers..

PS. You decided not to take part in the Alps meeting, after all?

Sorry, but i have not figured out exactly how to do it yet.
But i am told that we should drive the car untill we have the level of fuel left, where we want the light to come on, and then it should be possible to program the OBC so that this is now the level of fuel where the light comes on.
I will post a question on the Yahoo list, and see if someone can explain..
