More tyre woes...

Just got a super big screw-nail in one of my rears today, not yet pulled it out.

Thing is that I am not too keen on having these things repaired, not even sure if it is legal anymore, so I will probably end up replacing both the rears, the one on the other side is well worn anyway.

I am currently running Dunlops(SP Sport 9000) and will probably go for the same to replace the back two. I know some of you guys are running slightly wider rears, I'd appreciate all honest comments about this, before I commit to the normal 245x45x18

I'll be placing my order first thing in the morning, so get your replies in fast

I was running 255/40/18 S03s on the rear of my dearly departed with no problems
btw checkout www.blackcircles.com they were the cheapest place that I could find you had the choice of supply only or supply and fit at various locations nationwide

Hey there... Any closer to replacing your beast? I am actually seriously considering an E39, if I decide to sell the E34 later on in the year.

Anyway, I got a good eal on the front two at the start of the year, £294 for the two, fitted, which I thought was pretty good.

As the rear wheels are wider, it would seem like the obvious thing to do, but I am concerned about gearing, handeling and the possability of rubbing etc...

I hope you meant 'normal 245/40x18!

255/40-18 will do fine as well, although it will knock a little off the performance due to the extra mass and circumference to push around - and they usually cost more!

How's your new buy going anyway?

I think I'll just buy the same width tyres as the front, I was toying with 265x40x18 but I just feel they are a little expensive to find that they rub or something.

Can't quite understand though, why the back wheels are wider

Re: More tyre woes...

Very briefly, the rear tyres are stretched over those wider wheels resulting in less deflection in the tyre, especially in the sidewall.

- All IMHO: -

Having used this combination over the last 10,000 miles (3 months) including lots of fast road and nordschleife time, I can't imagine why you'd want to promote understeer by fitting wider rear tyres. When the bushes are in good shape and the suspension's aligned, it's just not a tail-happy car enough to warrant all that extra rear width, especially considering the cost, extra rolling resistance and weight - the cons outweigh the pros.

BMW M Gmbh did know what they were doing with this combination, and it feels brilliantly neutral.

With a new pair of Bridgestone Potenza S-03s on the back before this weekend's nurburgring trip, I was keen to see how they performed compared to the old Goodyear Eagle F1s which were fitted before. They're REALLY grippy. Naturally, it's still slippy if you hoof it on the apex of a bend in the wet, but in the dry there's just lots of grip. I'm quite pleased - £302 for a pair at Micheldever Tyres (but they only put 25psi in them and didn't balance the wheels properly )

My car is fine

Just had 1 or 2 little niggles to sort out but all done now...the viscous coupling needed changing and it needed rear brake pads....

other than that she's running beautifully...i love the way everybody can hear me coming up the road cos its so loud..LOL

its dues an oil service in about 1000 miles and between now and next summer i am gonna try and have some of the bodywork tidied up (14 years of stonechips )
