Tracking Device

Just renewed the car insurance £980 groan.

Intrestingly, a number of insurers now seem to want verification of the tracking device. Previously I never declared I had one as it didn't make any difference to the premium.

This got me thinking, how many of you on the board have tracking devices to either a) meet insurance requirements or b) to satisy your own peace of mind?
Personally, I'd have thought our beasts aren't now valuable enough???

Best

Re: Tracking Device

My car came with 'Tracker' which I had to renew for Directline. In fact every cert I've had recently from Directline states that the car will not be covered for theft if a tracking device is not fitted. I had a bun fight about this when I insured a 328 recently (and it was fitted with the BMW G3 Cat 1 immobiliser!!).

I've actually stumbled accross the device and it does not inspire confidence at all!! The installation looks poor and the battery packs generated a small mountain of 'fur'. I've a good mine to insist they check it before I renew.

If I had to fit one I'd probably think about the Trafficmaster system, I think its called 'Trackstar' or something which is marketed with the RAC. It uses GPS and cellphone technology. I think the Tracker unit needs a James Bond style radar screen fitted to the police car in hot persuit...............

Tracker will check it for you but you have to pay. Can't remember how much but something around £80 sounds about right.

If I needed to have one now I would probably go for something that uses GPS and cellphone technology like Trackm8

Re: Tracking Device

Never had one and never will!

I refuse to pay £600 (plus annual fees) to save £25 on my insurance premium when ultimately the role of the tracker is so that the insurance company doesn't have to pay out!

If my car gets nicked then I hope whoever steals it makes a good job of writing it off as I want my money's worth!

To be honest, I wouldn't want my car back if it got nicked, not least with all the money you'd lose with it being a stolen and recovered.

Re: Tracking Device

I guess it depends how quickly you get it back. I wouldn't want my car back if it's been trashed & chopped. A good tracking system should allow you to get your car back within minutes, (hopefully) before anything bad happens to it.

I've had an Auto-q system fitted from day one and they gave me a certificate which gets me an extra 5% off my premium. This is secondary though to the peace of mind it brings.

how much did it cost? Assume its fixed purchase cost then subscription? Can't seem to get a straight answer from the web site.

To be honest the turn off your car option appeals most compared to the other systems.
