Air suspension. Sacrilegous or innovative?

I was thinking about air suspension a lot lately. I think I would like to run it on my 525i at some point but after watching a youtube video from The Smoking Tire it got me thinking. Is air suspension a show car gadget to be a stance hero, or is it the future replacement of the coil spring? Would it be sacrilegious to run such a suspension on an M5? I understand the purist side of things and am not looking to open up that debate. But could air suspension have come far enough to handle as good if not better than the current suspension set ups that people run while also offering in car height adjustment for both looks, performance and convenience and still offering a comfortable ride? I have not currently made my mind on this and was curious where others opinions rest.

Cheers,

Brian

I don't know exact weight on a complete system but I would imagine it wouldn't be much different then having a few passengers, or a full tank of gas. I think I will try it on the 525i first and depending on the results I will go from there.

My 2003 E39/2 530i Touring has air-suspension on the rears and I think it really is great. Combined with the rack and pinion steering rack, it handles better and more precise than an E34. It also is not that complicated because the system operates independantly from the PAS-system.

But I would not change an E34 over that. To complicated.

My 528ia touring had air suspension, i replaced it with normal springs. It´s very complicated, compressor, valves, air tanks, etc. Also rubber springs get old and leak, new one cost much more than normal springs. Also here (winter) compressor get wet and freeze. There is air dryer, but it need service now and then. With steel springs it handles like before, but it is much more trustworthy. I works allways, it never ever say "self level susp.inactive" again...
