Angry Todays Fun.... Total Brake Failure !!

Driving around town today, I thought the pedal was becoming a little spongey.

Had to go somewhere, about three miles away. By the time I got there, I suspected something was more than a bit wrong.

When I left an hour later, the pedal just went straight to the floor, and I was left with maybe 5% of normal braking ability.

Luckily, being a Sunday, traffic was light, and I was only about two miles from my local BMW independant. So, I was a very naughty boy, and nursed it to their garage. This was done simply by keeping speed to 20-25 mph in third, then using third to brake slowly, then dropping to 2nd and 1st.

If I needed to stop completely (just three times on the trip) from the 5-10mph or so of 1st gear, then I`d touch the pedal to activate the brake lights for the benefit of any car behind me, then pull up the handbrake.

I left the keys with the garage owner, and a nice note for the mechanics tomorrow morning. They`re good boys, so I`m hoping to get the car back soon, I`ve no idea how busy they are.

General consensus of opinion seems to be a failure of either the master or slave cylinder of the braking system.

Could be a burst hose somewhere, but I didn`t have a chance to check under the car.

Anybody had this happen on any cars, and what`s a rough guide to the price to fix?

While it`s in I`m going to have the pads and disks all round, plus handbrake assembly and shoes. All this was already purchased ready to fit, but I haven`t fitted it yet. Due to lack of time, I`ll let them do it if the main problem isn`t too expensive.
Will also get the brakes drained and fluid replaced, it needs it.

Ivan.

Ivan,

Glad you managed to get to the garage safely!!

I seem to remember reading that master cylinder o-rings can leak,
which could leave you with symptoms similar to yours, if it went on long enough undetected, you can literally run out of brake fluid.
Usually you would hope that a hose or rigid pipe failure should leave the other circuit OK.
From what you describe, it is unlikely to be a mechanical fault at the pedal end.

If its an o-ring, at least it shouldn't be too dear.

Ivan,

On reflection, my previous post didn't make it clear enough that the weakness is the o-rings between reservoir and master cylinder, (not the internal seals).

Fingers faster than brain!

To me it sounds as though you've had a hose let go on one of the four corners or a caliper seal. Bust master cylinder seals cause soggy peddle for many hundreds of miles but you will still maintain more than 5 % breaking via the second circuit.

The problem is that more movement than usual on the master cylinder can bugger the seals anyway as I've previously encountered.

Brake servo failure would result in a hard peddle not soft. This is easy to check via peddle drop procedure but as you're beast is at a garage then no point explaining.

Let me know if you do need a master cylinder, I know a great brake place in Leeds. Became a bit of a pro on brakes- you have to rebuliding them from scratch on an old lotus.
They supplied a £245(from Lotus) Girling Master Cylinder new in box for £69!!! Similarly, I bet a BMW quoted price will probably cause a heart attack which is Lucas stuff.

As I said though, probably a hose or caliper seal leak!

regards

No.

They obviously weren`t expecting the car in, so managed to take a peek underneath on Monday afternoon. Couldn`t see any leaks or fluid from any calipers or hoses, but that`s as far as they got.

No news Tuesday, I`m hoping for at least a quote or diagnosis today. Annoyingly, I`ve a few days off work now, and needed it to do some flying about...
