performance bmw mag and there 0 to 60 times

reading performance bmw mag at the back there have speed info on all bmw and they say that the e34 m5 3.6 has a 0 to 60 time of 6.4sec and a e39 540i will do 6.2 to 60

this can not be right the e39 540i is bigger and Heavier and has got 286bhp

the e34 m5 is lighter and has got 315bhp

I mite be wrong but this can not be ture

Check the torque figures and you will see the 3.6 M5 is lower!

It's the torque that gives good 0-60 times.

In various magazines have seen times of 5.5-6.8 for the 3.6 and 5.1-6.3 for the 3.8

It all depends on how good the car, driver, weather is on the day!

ACtually the times of 6.1-6.2 for the 540i is for the automatic. Motortrend (If I can remember) got a 5.6s 0-60 time for the 540i 6spd sport. The stock torque rating for the '99-'03 models is 324ft/lbs (at lower RPMs, flatter torque curve). The car weighs about the same as en e34 M5 at ~3700-3900lbs. Remember that Acceleration is a function of.....anyways, torque is the main influence in acceleration times. (given same mass or weight in this instance).

I agree with you. Performance BMW's figures are way out. I remember one magazine quoted something like a 6.3 0-60 time for an E39 M5 and only later let on that the car's clutch was chronically slipping!

Ok IvanDias,

I own an e39 540i and an e34 w/ S38 engine tranny swap. I know how both perform. My stock 540i consitently did 5.5s to 60 and now does it in 5.3s. For pure acceleration I would take the 540i anyday. For all around fun I would take the e34. I'll eat your M5 for Dinner at the stoplight with my 540i. It's just a 3.6L.

Humm ?
I would love to see that race , a 540i against a E34 M5(3.8) !
Im a newbie with drag races but I didnt constantly 0-100 under 6s... on my dads E34(3.8L).

And btw the 540i has to be heavier then the M5 , its a V-8 !!!

Well I would love to know whats the best time that has ever been done with a E34 M5(3.8l)

The 540i is roughly the same weight. Here are 2 reasons: 1) the V8 engine has an aluminum block; S38 has an iron block and 6 throttle bodies 2) the e39 suspension has an aluminum subframe as well as many aluminum parts; the e34 has steel subframes and with the thrust arms and maybe the lower control arms in the front that can be aluminum.

540s

540's... Lovely cars for sure.
0-60 eh.. sorry but theres a fair few cars that can match or beat an E34 M5 (3.6 or 3.8) ...
Now you might eat an M5 for dinner at a stoplight.. Wait until you move off .. up to 60 I'd think things would be close.. we're only talking a few seconds after all..
After 60.. lets hope you had a light dinner.

Nice cars though 540's .. but as Ivan syas they aren't an M5

Of course if you filled both cars with fuel and people And 'things' at that stoplight (as mine often is).. where would that 540 come in?

Torque isn't everything at the drags. Look at a Honda S2000. No torque, all HP. To be fair, E34's drivers dont drop cluches at 8k to get their 0-60 times, but just offering the counterpoint. Sorry to say, the E39 540 will show taillights to a 3.6 S38, maybe a fender or door to a 3.8, and on the freeway, you have to remember the better aerodynamics of the E39. But, if I wanted something to have fun in, give me the E34 M5 any day of the week!
