Trany and Diff oil

Howdy,

My dealer is recommending Castrol ATF Dexron III Mercon for my tranny and Castrol SAE 75W-140 API GL-5 for the rear diff.

Any restrictions regarding these recomendations? I am quite comfortable with the tranny oil but not quite sure about the 75W-140 in the rear diff.

Thanks!

Rodrigo,

I've just filled my tran with Royal Purple Synchromax which is a fully synthetic oil specifically designed to replace ATF in manual gearboxes. It works fine (better than ATF on a cold day!) but costs a fortune!

My rear diff is now filled with Castrol SAF-XJ which is a synthetic gear oil specifically formulated for LSD type axles. I think this is the stuff BMW uses in the UK but you can only buy it in 25ltre drums which causes problems. Castrol Classic Oils can decant 5ltrs but again it costs a fortune!

Castrol's other suggestion for the diff was Hypoy LS. Check this link.

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately our selection of oils here isn't as wide as overseas. Since it isn't as cold down here, even though today is 10o Celsius (very cold for us), I think they probably stick with regular ATF at the dealer.

The SAF-XJ you mentioned is 75W-140?

Best regards!
