Dear All,
Was at my local specialists at 5pm today having seen Wombat earlier ( nice meeting you

)
Anyway, went to settle my latest bill and Matt who does all the stuff on mine said to take a look at a E34 M5 they just had in. Apparently the owner just bought this 1993 for 8K with it 'only ' needing a clutch prior to a trip round Europe on Saturday.
When the owner came back to pick up the car he was told in all seriousness to sit down. Below is a list of what needs doing:-
4 x EDC Shocks all leaking, fronts the worst.
Radiator and Fan.
Bushes all round.
Wheel Bearings 1x front 1x rear.
All coolant hoses .
Sump leaks (badly).
Gearbox input shaft seal is shot.
Welding work to the rear subframe owing to the rear (twin bolt lug) damaged - this means the car has had one hell of a life.
Broken central locking mech (rear x 1).
To people looking at these cars, PLEASE get potential purchases checked out by a dealer or by a board member. Even pay to get the sellers car serviced if unsure as a few hundred quite might save you a few grand + down the line.
To echo the words of another post, book prices don't count for much and nor realistically does mileage, with 8 years past since even the last made.
Most people automatically assume lower miles = less problems. This is not the case and CONDITION IS KEY. I walked away from a 52K mile Avus blue with more wrong with it than the 80K mile M5 I ended up buying for more money. The M5 at the specialist above had an indicated 77K on the clock and alledged service history.
When looking at EDC equipped cars ALWAYS factor in that the shocks WILL cost you £2500K.

. If the owner says they were changed get them to prove it or go check at BMW (if the work was undertaken by them).
Even if its only the fronts or rears that have gone, it won't be long before the other set go....and they will!
Remember, there is no such thing as a cheap M5

P.S. The funny thing is, this guy is still going in his M5 on Saturday!!!!! He is going to top up the fluids
