A Warning To Potential Buyers

Dear All,

Was at my local specialists at 5pm today having seen Wombat earlier ( nice meeting you )

Anyway, went to settle my latest bill and Matt who does all the stuff on mine said to take a look at a E34 M5 they just had in. Apparently the owner just bought this 1993 for 8K with it 'only ' needing a clutch prior to a trip round Europe on Saturday.

When the owner came back to pick up the car he was told in all seriousness to sit down. Below is a list of what needs doing:-

4 x EDC Shocks all leaking, fronts the worst.
Radiator and Fan.
Bushes all round.
Wheel Bearings 1x front 1x rear.
All coolant hoses .
Sump leaks (badly).
Gearbox input shaft seal is shot.
Welding work to the rear subframe owing to the rear (twin bolt lug) damaged - this means the car has had one hell of a life.
Broken central locking mech (rear x 1).

To people looking at these cars, PLEASE get potential purchases checked out by a dealer or by a board member. Even pay to get the sellers car serviced if unsure as a few hundred quite might save you a few grand + down the line.

To echo the words of another post, book prices don't count for much and nor realistically does mileage, with 8 years past since even the last made.

Most people automatically assume lower miles = less problems. This is not the case and CONDITION IS KEY. I walked away from a 52K mile Avus blue with more wrong with it than the 80K mile M5 I ended up buying for more money. The M5 at the specialist above had an indicated 77K on the clock and alledged service history.

When looking at EDC equipped cars ALWAYS factor in that the shocks WILL cost you £2500K. . If the owner says they were changed get them to prove it or go check at BMW (if the work was undertaken by them).

Even if its only the fronts or rears that have gone, it won't be long before the other set go....and they will!

Remember, there is no such thing as a cheap M5

Regards

M5 Powered

P.S. The funny thing is, this guy is still going in his M5 on Saturday!!!!! He is going to top up the fluids

The moral to your story is solid ,MPowered. I couldn't agree more. Potential buyers should take that to heart.

Was it Daytona violet

It might be my old one as all the shocks had it, an it did leak oil an it did overheat a bit sometimes. An inspection 2 after repairs cost me 2 grand. An the milage was 177 not 77K.

Thanks.

Be brave, take your time and wait for a good one. They are out there. Make sure it's inspected by a very good mechanic and be ready to spend some money on it right away. Even a creme puff can swallow a big hunk of cash in no time. I can say my car has been very reliable once it was dialed in with some modifications and maintainence.

I don't think an AA inspection would be worth the money...

I suppose the proof of the pudding, would be when I get my first inspection (inspection II obviously).

What I did when I got my 525 was to have it have an inspection II right away, even though I was told it had just had a "major" service. This proved to be an expensive lesson, though I feel that you can judge what work to get done and what not to. ie I was told I had a leaking shock at the rear, one year on I assume I still have a leaking shock at the rear, as it was not picked up at MOT time.

However, there are some things that I got done, without thinking, like the brakes, disks and pads all round.

Before everyone screams at me, i brought the car for 3500 uk pounds 18 months back. An it had 177K, no service history an i only sold it for 5000. I knew it was a bad, but it was a bottomless pit.

I think now is the time to buy an e39 M5, with BMW warranty. Saying that i have an M3 evo, an its so good on fuel 30mpg, an reliable, cheap to maintain.

Though i only am gonna keep it a few more months as i got the plate M5 VS U (M5 VSU) an i miss my M5's, though i am too worried about an e34 so i think i'll have to pay 20+ for a nice e39 M5.Although this is subject to me getting a fuel card with work

Tread carefully.

I can only agree with everything that's been said.

It took me three years to find mine, I must have looked at dozens and paid to have a few inspected, most were being sold as mint cars with service history and they were all pretty poor.

Whats more annoying is the fact that I had to jump on a plane and hire a car just to get to view these

Anyway - just make sure you get it checked out by someone who knows what they're doing.
