UK Only - 2 "cheap" M5s on Ebay

UK M5 board surfers !!

Lots of car, for not much money!!

Ebay UK ;

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...gory=9837&rd=1

Sellers blurb

1991 BMW M5 saloon, finished in jet black with light grey leather.
162000 miles in the hands of four owners, some history, with full leather, air conditioning, abs, electric (memory) seats/windows/sunroof/mirrors, cruise control, and remote central locking linked to an immobiliser.

Ebay UK ;

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...gory=9837&rd=1

Sellers blurb.

Immaculate car, with a Full Service History and only 3 owners from new, and only 100k miles. Maritius Blue with "Full" Champagne Leather interior, featuring Recaro electrically heated memory seats which are in excellent clean condition, an electric sunroof, genuine M5 alloy wheels, air conditioning, on board computer, adjustable steering column and power steering, remote alarm/immobiliser (Thatcham Approved). All bills and receipts since new, with only 6000 miles covered in the last 2 years.

Now we all know that there`s no such thing as a "cheap" M5, what you save on the purchase price, you spend on putting it right.....

but....

Hell, it`s less than four grand, they`re old enough and hardly concours, so why not just regard the cash as just the years depreciation on the newer car you were going to buy, and drive that baby about for a year until it blows up.*

Don`t crash it, it buggers up the insurance quotations for everyone else in the UK, as there are so few around.

Also, just make sure when it dies, that you don`t do a dodgy "Oh dear... it`s been magically stolen and found later by the police, crikey, piston thru the block?? No officer, it wasn`t like that when it went, must have been those pesky joyriders.... now, about that total loss cheque...."

Cause that`ll ruin my insurance next year too!!

Ivan

*When it goes bang, before you get it squashed into a cube, I need some bits off it. Cash money, email me first!!

PS. 100k miles FSH, almost worth buying just for spare engine and gearbox!!! LOL....

Ivan, from reading your comments, anyone know how much M5's cost to insure on classic car policies? I guess these aren't affected by joy riders as much???

Does the M5 need to be 10 + years old though on these policies?

Regards

From my experience, the insurance companies don`t classify M5s as "classic" cars, I suppose the E34 bodyshape doesn`t yet qualify.

When I`ve talked to insurers about various policies and mileage options, they generally admitted that being insurance group 20, they classify the car and get a price on a case by case basis.

"Classic" cars tend to be older, or rarer in their design rather than just a flagship of a mass-produced model, albeit a hand-built flagship in the M5s case.

For example, in another ten to twelve years, you could probably class the Z8 as a "classic", it being fifteen years old, and "rare", even though they probably sold more than the E34 M5. The one off design will add clout to its "classic" status, that wouldn`t get attributed to say an Audi RS4/RS6, a or E39 M5.

Difficult with Mercs, the only real "classics" that spring to mind as Joe Public would recognise are the old 70s slab-shaped cabriolets and the gullwinged one from earlier. I would think that the SL55 will be one day, yet the SL500 from the early 90s now just looks dated more than classic (IMHO).
Don`t get me wrong, I like Mercs, I`d love a late 80s/early 90s 500SEC AMG in red with cream leather or the previous generation S500/S600 limo, but they are "nice cars" rather than "classics".

Finally, I find that if you ask about proper classic policies, they really are expecting you to use the car as a weekender, as the mileage limits to get better prices are restrictive, typically less than three or four thousand a year. No daily drivers then!!

This year Liverpool Victoria murdered everyone elses price for insurance, beating the previous recommendation, Norwich Union. You have to be an old man like me (over 30) to get a good price though.

Herts Insurance Consultants (I think!) will quote on an E34 M5 for a classic policy if its over 10 years old.

I tried last year, but I had 2 problems:

Firstly, my car was only 9 years old at the time, and secondly, I have a Liverpool post code, which although its not at all a high crime area, the fact it started with L meant they wouldn't quote

Worth a try for those of you who don't live in the ghetto though

Cheers,
Bryn.

I wouldn't insure a scouser either

Joking apart, my girlfriend's parental home is one and a half miles from mine. The difference however is £800 on my car insurance even though both are respectable areas.

Turns out her road had a crime spree about eight years ago with loads of car radio's being nicked. I guess it got moved up classification and i doubt brokers like moving them back, even when they settle down. Extra bit or margin to the insurers for nothing in my caustic opinion.

regards

Sharp eyes there Miles !!

Good luck to him, a month roaring about in an M5 followed by selling it for £1200 more than you paid!!

Seriously, for £2800 I`d have bought it had I seen it....

Just shows you what can happen if you put a proper detailed Ebay auction with photos and a fuller spec, rather than the original fairly sparse auction.
