Does anyone's S38 not use oil?

When I was commuting in my M5, I was adding up to a litre of oil every 2000 miles or so. I also noticed that it would puff smoke on hard acceleration.

From reading this board, I get the impression the S38 uses quite a lot of oil, and even the handbook mentions a high acceptable oil usage.

Does anyone's engine not use a lot of oil?

Does anyone know why the S38 uses a relatively high amount of oil?

Cheers,
Bryn.

Mine uses about the same, but it varies - i.e. sometimes I can go 4 weeks without needing a top-up (2500 miles) although still checking weekly, but sometimes I can need a litre a week (600 miles).

My varying usage is probably down to the different oils I use. I use everything from Castrol RS, Mobil 1, Castrol Magnatec, VW Synta Gold (have some left over from my old car and it is 0w40 anyway) - whichever comes to hand first goes in.

I also get the tiny puff of smoke as the car squats down and shoots off - could be the cat getting cleaned as a pressure wave gets sent through from the huge acceleration boost.

Mine ( 1994 3.8 E34 M5 ) used 2 litres of oil going down to Rome and back recently. We did about 2500 miles and it was hot and the speeds were very high on the way down and high on the way back.

I think it is natural to expect relatively high oil consumption on a motor as highly tuned as a S38.

I'm lucky to get 500 miles from a litre of Mobil 1 so am going to go back to either Castrol RS or Magnatec. Apparently nothing wrong with the engine according to mechanics. Also get puff of brown smoke on flooring the pedal. Have been told this is just clearing the crap out of the cat.

Under hard acceleration it is mostly crap coming out the rear of the car. Remember 3.8 litres of displacement produces alot of waste.

From being in a chase car behind Mmm-Five (trackday) they do throw loads out to the point you get a faint smell of oil on full throttle. Both M5's on the day were doing exactly the same so its normal.

Regards

M5 Powered

Different

Mine will only burn excessive oil when I change gears at or a little above 7000RPM frequently. If driven fuel efficiently (meaning changing gears frequently and not reving it often), it hardly burns any oil.

My 1995 M5 with 50,000 miles? burns next to no oil. I'm down about a half a quart since the last oil change probably 3,000 miles back. The oil is mobil 1 15W50. The car gets run up to 7,000 rpm's on occasion but is not tracked.

Mines normal

Only uses a noticeable amount of oil when driven "ENTHUSIASTICALLY"

Had engine fully rebuilt 15k ago and puffs on FULL throttle but only one off then clean as a whistle. Mmm five and myself were on a track day and i never noticed any puffing on either so would believe it to happen after normal driving (not ///M5 normal)

Castrol RS 10w 60 since and changed EVERY 3k outside of normal servicing and she has had Shell Optimax only except ONCE when Loughboro` had no local Shell garage so Super was the begrudged substitute

I have 1991 E34 M5 with 90,000 km. I change oil every 5,000 km (3,000 miles), so far without any oil consumption. I use Amsoil 20W-50 series 2000 but I will be switching to 10W-40 soon. I will be monitoring for any oil consumption with the new oil viscosity.

I guess I'm extremely lucky. When we drove from Schopfheim, Germany(30 miutes north east of Basil, Switzerland) to Catania, Sicily, we used maybe a half litre, if that. The previous owner was using Castrol 10w-60, synthetic ofcourse. I always thought that was pretty normal. I used to have a 1602ti that had a 2.1 litre engine and 45mm side drafts with a 316 duration cam and the oil pressure would be about 150 psi at about 8500 rpm and it didn't burn oil at all either. I dunna know. I guess I'm lucky like that.
