Water in #1 Plug Hole

Hey guys, early in the week my car (3.8liter) developed a misfire after sitting for about week. Took it to my mechanic and when he went to check the plugs he found brownish colored water in the #1 plug hole and it was not antifreeze. He blew the water out and drove it and it drove fine. There is no antifreeze in the oil and the coolant level and oil levels have not changed. Does anyone know how water could have gotten in there?

Also, there is a very small amount of sludge in the coolant expansion tank which was not there prior to having another shop about 3 weeks ago r&r the waterpump and fan clutch. Could it be possible that the shop might have spilled some coolant and when rinsing it off got water in the plug hole? I did add some Redline Water Wetter, maybe it did not mix well with whatever type of antfreeze they used. At the same time, the shop also performed a leakdown test (less than 10%) and compression check (around 225). Can anyone come up with a theory or things to check to determine how water might have gotten in there? Are there any other things that I should check for peace of mind?

Thanks,
Rick Calvin 93 M5 Touring

In the eighteen months or so I `ve been around this board, I`ve heard of three instances of this misfire, plus it happened to me too.

The usual suspect is washing the car, most often with a pressure hose, when water seems to have a problem draining away in quantity from the windshield and windscreen wiper areas. It overflows or just plain spashes on the underside of the bonnet (hood) then finds its way to the cylinder 1 spark plug.

Then, misfire until evaporation and heat gets rid of it, or it is cleaned out. This is best done by removing the HT cable plug thing, then poking a absorbant rag (not tissue) down there with a thin wooden or plastic stick, remembering to hold the other end of the rag. Wood or plastic won`t damage the spark plug.

Don`t undo the spark plug with the spark plug removal tool, as all the water plus any contaminants will just drain into cylinder one, which is not the best way to remove them via the exhaust !!

Also, any really careless splashing around of coolant will have the same effect, but I see no easy way to do that "by accident".

However, if they hosed any spilt coolant from the engine with the bonnet open using a hose, there`s the cause !!

Hope this helps.

Ivan.

Hi Rick,
I agree with -Ivan-, either the work-shop messed up with coolant
or they covered up any misforttune with an engine wash -
both wud result in water in hole cyl. 1 (+ perhaps 2) and a possible wet ignition coil for cyl 1 + 2 -
next time it happens, it can happen if you clean the engine,
open the cover, use pressure-air to blow dry the ignition coils
and the plug-holes, no need to touch the plugs -
-
I believe you can stop worrying !
brgds
