EDC problem

Hello everyone on this forum. I have some problems with my EDC system. A few months ago, I took out the instrument panel to find a coin that was rattling somewhere deep within. I drove the car without the panel to find the location of the coin. When I had finally found and removed the coin (on top of the heater flap) and put the instrument panel back in, the EDC light only went on very briefly, then switched off (both in p and s mode) and the computer said "EDC nicht aktiv". This has not changed, unfortunately, and the car is now stuck in the default sport-mode. As far as I can tell, the cables are OK. The dealer said they checked the system when I had it serviced, and that it would be a leaking EDC shock in the rear. When I measure between the wires of the rear shocks, however, I get the same resistance values on both shocks, which puzzles me. I'm not sure if I should trust the dealer on this. I also started to notice noise from the power steering in tight corners. So yesterday I went to my dealer and bought some fluid. The system - which also supplies the EDC hydraulics - took almost a litre!! Makes me think the dealer never checked the level, because there are no big obvious leaks (nothing on the pavement, for instance).

My questions therefor:
-could it be that the EDC computer just needs resetting, and can I do this myself?

-could it be that too much air came into the system, and how do I bleed it?

Any (other) suggestions would be welcome.\

Thanks,

Roger

Hello there,
From my experience, the dealers have a limited possibilty to troubleshoot the EDC system, for example:
For a long time I had very occasional random "EDC nicht activ" warnings and I noticed a leak on one rear damper unit.
Later the warnings became more frequent until recently when the warning came on every time I turned the key. Over the whole period of about 18 months the leak has reduced and now has stopped. (I keep ckecking the fluid level which doesn't drop much)
So the warning doesn't seem to have anything to do with leakage.
I had the system analysed on the famous BMW computer and no faults were found even when the "EDC nicht activ" warning was showing in the car. All they said was, it could be a wiring problem somewhere. Not very helpful. This was a big main dealer in Frankfurt.
They did show me one trick though which might be helpful to you:
To reset the computer, disconnect both leads from the battery and connect them together for a few seconds. It works, but only for a short while in my case.

When I get time to go underneath I will do a thorough check on the wiring around the rear axle where most EDC wiring problems are found.
In the mean time I have removed the relay (located close to the battery under the rear seat) this stops the warning messages but also defaults the system into permanent sport mode, which I don't find a problem.
Hope these comments are a bit useful.
