Ooops!! Brake bleed bolt sheared off !! Help !!

Ooops.

Went to do up the blake fluid bleed bolt on the front caliper and the d4mn thing sheared off.

Anyone have any bright ideas how to remove it now?


I`m thinking either dremmel a new line to fit a flatblade screwdriver, but I don`t think there`s room to get it in.

My other thought is to take a long hard look at the replacement bolt I have, then diplomatically drill out the interior of the old bolt, then undo it from the hollow inside once the pressure holding it tight is lessened as the bolt collapses.
This is how I`ve removed shorn off bolts in the past.


Is there any other method I should be aware of, as I really want to avoid damaging the caliper, as one, I bet they`re a fortune, and two, once I do it, the car is undriveable until its a done deal.


Hey, Xipe, do you want to sell a front right caliper ??? LOL.

What cars does the M5 3.6 1990 share its front brakes with, in case I decide on a second hand one?

I think you've answered your own question. Next option is a new caliper. My girlfriends dad would probably stick some No Nails in the hole and hope for the best. The T*at was prepared to duck tape a leaking rubber fuel line on an omega last week.

I agree with the drilling out method and you could try a tool called easyout. After drilling you screw this in and it has a reverse thread so as you tighten it up it effectively loosens the maverick stud but is not always as straight forward as that but is the idea

If you have to change the caliper/s they are not very expensive for the 3.6 and pre 95 3.8s. The OEM price should be around £110 plus VAT for a set of front calipers and pads. The late 3.8 calipers are 400+.

*****ing about shocks at £600 each, then more moaning about brake calipers at £400.

Crikey, you`ll be complaining next that dual-mass flywheels are a few bob, or that exhausts aren`t very cheap....

With the shocks you get a large heavy lump of metal that feels and looks like 400 to 600 worth. The calipers I'm not so impressed by but the stopping power sure makes up for this and was denoted by

Everybody, Ivan is right, they should at least be 1200 each side in anyone's book. Let's petition BMW and get this sorted out

just curious: did it shear off while you were attempting to loosen it or when you were tightening it?

is it leaking fluid now?

Sheared off while doing it up after changing the brake pads.

Was a bit rusty, now have bought replacement bleed screws, but obviously now cannot drain and do the brake fluid !!
