Electric seat repair

Hi there

One of the problems on my car has been that the electric seat reclining mechanism on both my front seats have failed in recent months, I have looked at the information available and the most common method is to shorten the outer sleeve, but i have come accross another method that suited me better.

The problem with the electric seats is that most of it movements are cable operated and the inner drive cables have square ends that round off with use.

I removed the inner cable that was working, degreased it and held in a vice and with a mig welder added blobs of weld to lengthen it by a 1/4 of on inch approx, (the vice will absorb a lot of the heat of cable avoiding damage to it by overheating). then proceeded with a file tomake the end square again, refitted the cable and it works fine again.

Now I intend to repeat the operation with passenger seat, which will make my girlfriend very happy.

One thing that was obvious is that when I removed the drivers seat from the car is the weight of the seat, it must be around 40 kilos at least, not exactly lightweight. I if wasnt because it would destroy the aesthetics of the interior I would consider fitting some lightweight recliners from recaro or another reputable manufacturer and would end up with a car thats 60 or 70 kg lighter.

Regards
