in my car there is a kenwood cd-tuner , with an amp in the boot. the cd function has died and i am looking for a replacement. the model of head unit is KDC86R. i pulled it out to see wiring set up. there is the red/black and yellow - power. and 4 leads coming from the amp - i presume. no speaker wires - all wired into the amp? can i keep the amp and wire in a new head unit ? if yes what can i fit? help?

Hi there

I beleive the wiring set up with the factory amp is as follows

Black- Earth
Red 12 v live - connected to ignition switch
Yellow - 12v ilumination - connected to dash lights

The four wires are the speaker outputs L & R channels, the amp in the boot, amplifies the from the speaker signal.

If you fit a more modern unit, you may have to locate a permanent live to connect to the radio so it doesnt loose its memry presets.

I personally would recommend you fit a Kenwood mask unit, where the fascia revolves when you switch the ignition and leaves an innocent looking black panel + no hassle in remebering to carry the front panel.

Hi there

Forgot to mention the radio should also have a blue lead which connects to the electric antena and may also connect to the amp to switch it on.
