New front tyres, Pirelli P-Zero Asimmetrico!!

Just done one hundred miles on my new front Pirelli P-Zero Asimmetrico. They are 245/40/17 on 8.0"J M-System II wheels (standard factory issue).

They look great, not a really shock-horror-wow tread pattern like a Yokohama AVS Sport for example, but the four or so different tread patterns across the tyre look pretty up for business.

The tyres are still covered in chalk marks from the balancing and the wheels in brake dust and fingerprints, but expect some pics on Saturday afternoon.

The tyres were £106 inc VAT (UK sales tax of 17.5%) each, and the price included valves, balancing on the machine, then mounting on the car and fine tuning balancing with a special machine that I`d never seen before.
Cool.
I knew that racing cars had the whole rotating assembly balanced on the car, but didn`t think that my little ol` E34 would warrant it.
The price was a special as I`ve known the guy for years and have started to put quite a few people his way for work.

They look huge. The pattern of the Pirellis makes the old 235/45/17 Avon ZZR1 that used to be on the the front seem bigger, but the moment the wheels are turned to a sharp angle and protrude... watch out baby !! LOL.

Ivan.

Hi Ian,

Were the tyres balanced while on the car or on a computer controlled road force tester? I just had mine done two days ago as I threw a weight off the front. From talking to BMTR there are only a few of these machines in the country at specialist tyre places and are mandatory for bulk Pirelli race tyre purchasers (read porsche owners) who have suspect tyre.

If it's the same one, when balacing the wheel it gives a 3D wire frame picture of the tyre and is even smart enough to detect where repairs have been made.

The system has to be this clever as the metal banding in high performance tyres can rust causing a tyre to warp ever so slightly yet all without loss of air. Clever stuff nonetheless.

So can we order these tyres directly at this price or do we need to order them through you so that yo uget your commission?

BTW - what's the best price on 'proper' M5 tyres . . . 245/40 z18!

Also, do the tyres have the same rolling radius now that you have gone up to 245 and come down to 40 profile?

@Mmm-five,
What do you mean "Proper M5 tyres",
Ivan and me we both got the "Proper M5 tyres" you got the ones five years later because BMW had to keep up with the Jones`s, and they needed a new wheel for the seven!!!
(not that I wouldent buy them from you should you feel the need to sell them!) 8-)

Yeah !!

235/45/17 on front and 255/40/17 on the rear. "Proper" M5 Wheels.

Just because you sad fashion victim owners of later cars had some desperate need for BMW to rice out their cars with something called "18 inch M-Parallels" with 245s all round.

Errgh! 245 at the back. Girls car if you ask me.

And don`t even start me on the muppets with the throwing stars... pretenders to the throne if ever I saw any.

Turbines. Now there`s a word. Puts hair on your chest my son. Or, if you are hard enough, then *no* turbines. Throw caution to the wind, gather in horror stories of mythical cracked rotors and anger the Gods by wearing your wheels as Mad Max intended them.

Nurse !! It`s happening again...

Maybe you need more throttle !!

With now 255/40/17 rear and 245/40/17 front, I`m hoping the understeer tendancies will be damped down a little.

Unfortunately it`s been raining solid for the last three days, and unless you`re in s straight line, 2000rpm is easily enough for mad sliding about in first and second gear.

Will report when dry!!

Also, can`t wait to put 265/xx/17 on the back !! LOL. Wear out you rear tyres!!

Ivan.

I have had Pirelli Symmetrico and Asimmetrico on the car for the last 4 years. Great tyres, but they wear quickly and are VERY sensitive to corect alignment. I had Assimmitrico both on the front and on the rear axis and the car is really glued to the road. I have also tried Simmetrico on the fron and Assimetrico on the rear. I could not tel any difference.
However, when worn a bit, they will follow every "hair" on the road and the car gets more and more diifcult to drive comfortably.
I am now using Uniroyal rain tyres and the car car acts as it should even if fuel consumption is slightly higher.
