Oh !! My pet project. I`ve been thinking about this for a while now.

I see a big problem with the fuel tank.

These were taken of the 535i a year or two ago, and you can see that the fuel tank is flush to the underside of the car right up to the right hand side rear wing.

The right hand metal "strap" on the fuel tank in the first pic is about six inches from the right hand outer paintwork.

Apparently the E39 cars have a (sort of relatively easily) removable section of the base of the trunk/boot floorpan that allows the exhaust to intrude. This is why the E39 M5 doesn`t have a full size spare tyre like a 540 or other 5 would.
This allows the "clone" M5 wannabees to go the whole hog and replace this section to give the four rear pipes.

So;

Given my limited engineering brainpower, I have come up with the following options, only one of which I regard as a valid attempt.

1. My choice, but the hardest. Remove the fuel tank, have it modified, or probably for safety and legal resons, completely custom built or adapted from another car, then insulated from the engines exhaust heat around the "dent" that is the new path of the right hand side exhaust exits.
I reckon on that the exhaust could be cut immediately aft of the second silencer or cat, before the backbox, then of course there is the whole problem of the right backbox. I think that an aftermarket E39 M5 (kelleners etc) box would do, although this adds more expense, because if you do one side....

2. Cheap but possible clearance and heat issues. Run a pipe across under the tank. I don`t like it because it will look crap up close and underneath (sad ricer). It will have heat issues with the tank (probably) and also ground clearance just became a headache.

3. Genuine Ford Fiesta / Saxo / Escort / Civic / Beetle Ricer spectacular. Run a pipe from the rear of the backbox just before the main two left exhausts across under the rear spoiler to a new hole in the right hand side of the valance. No additional backbox required.

Let me state without further ado, that I will personally drive my car into a crusher and press a large red button, turning my car into a nice red cube about so big, before I allow anything like number three near my car. LOL.

Ivan.
