Is there a site to get a price and shipping for a 6 spped gearbox. I have the 5 speed on my E34 M5 and would like to put in a 6 speed. Used or new, any ideas ?....Alan
Thanks Guys for the replies....If anyone knows where, should I consider using a salvaged gearbox of a 540OI from say Bavarian Auto Recycle?.....I know they get damaged cars but I worry if it would be mechanically fit...Alan
If information I have read is correct, the 6 speed box from an E34 540i manual is the same part. I also believe, but not as sure, that the box was also used in one of the 850i, probably the sport.
Unfortunately, the 540i was almost exclusively sold as an auto, and when you thought that they were rare, try looking for a 850CSI that`s been chasing trees again.
I suspect that there are a whole lot more 540i owners looking in salvage yards for M5s that have been driving fast down short roads than the other way around.
Didn`t Mike get one from his UK dealer at a super price of £1950 UK GBP??? I think he had a deal (supposedly because they messed up rebuilding one?).
I can`t recall whether that was including or excluding VAT (UK sales tax of 17.5%), or whether that was supply or supply and fit.
I have not got the final drive ratio for the 3.8 cars, but if AlanArcher says it needs a new one then nuff said.
I think I`m right in saying that the 3.8 cars diff also used a new propshaft, so that means that....
Please correct me if I`m wrong.
6 box into 5 car goes, but diff ratio may not be optimum.
6 box into 5 car with 6 diff needs 6 propshaft.
Ivan.

i have to add, i know two people with the 280/6
fitted to early 3.8's with the 3:9 diff and it works
no problem at all, top speed is around 160....
5-speed euro M5:
Top: 0.81
4th: 1.00
3rd: 1.35
2nd: 2.08
1st: 3.51
Final drive: 3.91
6-Speed euro M5:
1st: 4.23:1
2nd 2.51:1
3rd 1.57:1
4th 1.23:1
5th 1.00:1
6th 0.83:1
Final Drive 3.23:1
Yes ofcourse you can install the 280/6 in a 5-speed car, but if you keep the 3,91 diff, you end up having 6th gear beeing ever so slightly lower than 5th was with the 280/5 box, and you have an extra gear below 1st, wich you have absolutely no use for.
Donati says: If installing a 280/6, then go for a 3,4ish diff.
PS. Not sure, but i think a new (shorter) propshaft is needed regardless wich diff is used. Guessing the 280/6 is a bit longer than the 280/5.

Sorry Alan, i have no idea.
Im guessing the most likely will be to find a crashed 6-speeder, or find a mechanic that specializes in M cars, who might have a used one laying around.
Hmm, maybe parting out crashed M5's could be an ok business?
I wasn't trying to correct you !, and i agree with what
you say about first gear being all but useless !!
This is not a conversion i would undertake with a 3.9 in the
tail !!
A little while back there was quite a long post about the
benefits of 6 gears, and in the end most of us concluded that
more shifting= more time lost !!
As for the 6speed from a 540/840,
these are V8's and have a different bellhousing/ crankcasing
so without modification this unit wouldn't fit.
