95 M5 touring 3.8 engine upgrades ?

Is there engine upgrades availible for my car ? ( chips , etc... )

When upgraded , does it make a signifigant difference in proformance of the car ?

And are there stages of upgrades you can do ? ( i.e. chips [$1000. ] , $5k ... , 10k .... , etc.. )

I live at 7500 feet above sea level , I've never driven my car at sea level --- is there a big difference in proformance ?

My gas milage sucks ? ( 10-13 city & 15-16 hwy ) IS THIS NORMAL ? I have a X5 4.4 & a 850i that get better milage than my M5 touring .

Finally , This is my favorite car I've ever owned in my life . ( I've had Alfa's , LOTUS'S, JENSEN'S, MASERATI'S , PORCHES & MANY OTHER BMW'S [ 2002 , 850I , 540 S 6 SPD , 528 , 535 S , ETC..)

THIS IS A GREAR CAR !

There is a camshaft which is reputed to give

370 bhp

A chip will give a bit of a boost approx 10-15bhp

An exhaust to help her breathe and an induction kit will do the trick but all the above will cost in the region of

£3000

But could be worth it

These are approx and british prices

Hope this helps and welcome to the board

Be informed that the engine already got a semi race camshaft ,that's probbably one off the reasons you like the driving carracteristics off your car .(semi !)
But if yo want more agressive ,this not only on the driving carracter but also on the rest off the engine ! ;look around at the specialized race equip constructers .
Someone I know had a schrick installed ,and whas very pleased with it ,nevertheless changed it back to normal after about 10000miles .
They are on the net , have a look at schrick.de , really high quality stuff.
Logically ,putting a race camshaft on would also need adjoining changes to get the best out off it .

Hi there

Shrick indeed do make a camshaft for 3.8 engine, its an inlet cam and it has 270º duration (standeard duration is 264º I beleive)and slightly more lift than the original one, they reckon that it will give between 10 to 15 % more power at the top end.

I enquiered about this cam myself and asked as to wether it would need a special chip or cam gear, and they said it was compatible with the standard software map of the engine and cam sprocket.

the cost of the cam is 600 € plus tax plus shipping costs.

This is a mod I am considering myself doing, if you add a chip and better air filter that is less restrictive to the equation aswell its quite possible that the engine might indeed deliver something close to the 370 BHP, only a dyno run before and after will confirm this.

there is a member of this board, who I beleive has carried out these very same mods, G Boyd, maybe he can shed some light on the matter as to how much of an improvement did the cam and chip make to his car.

I hope this helps

regards

The only cam I can see for the S38 is the 280º cam for €660 as on page 9 of the July catalogue. I guess this is even more radical than the 270º!

I can easily believe an extra 10-15bhp for 16º extra duration.

Hi chaps

The details i got of the cam also included a remap of the ecu and was £2300 and this price was from Munich Legends

01825 740 456

I spoke to Barney Halse

The reason i never took up the option was i was rebuilding the engine and the wife was already displeased with the expense so i thought the beast is fast enough so i will go without

Mind you the Schrick cam is looking very attractive and a lot less expensive

Hi guys

I thought I better recheck the email I received from schrick

The camshaft they offer for the 3.8 engine is part number

207 DI 720 - 00 and it has 280º degrees and not 270º as I originally thought, (original cam 264º) the schrick cam has 11.00 mm lift (10.7 mm for the original cam)

They expect a power increase of up to 10 % and it costs 660 €
plus VAT

Assuming that a 3.8 engine develops 340 bhp + 10% (34 bhp)=374 BHP, thats the theory, the truth is probably a bit less.
If you add a chip, or have the ECU reprogrammed to make the best out the available engine set up, I would expect the engine to achieve the full 10% improvement.

I would expect the engine to loose some torque and power at the bottom of the rev range, the question is how much ?

Hopefully, someone who has performed this modification reads this thread and can enlighten us.

Regards

I feel a call to Munich Legends, Birds, or Bexley Motor Works coming up.

Do you think the insurance company would like to know about this mod if I went ahead
