Oops I broke it

Well I didn't directly, but on Saturday two of the belts snapped. I think they are the PAS and water pump belts, but I haven't looked in detail yet. The car still runs, but obviously without any coolant or PAS, I won't be going anywhere in it!

Its my fault for not inspecting the belts, so I still regard the car as the most reliable I've owned

Anyone know what the cost of these belts is, and how difficult a job it is to replace them?

Cheers,
Bryn.

very straight foward replacement, they all loop
over the fan, just need to remove the upper cowling
and engine undershield.
I replaced the tensioning racks when i did mine (on the alternator)
and pas pump as they were worn & wouldn't tension up.

Regards,

Alan Archer

On my previous 1992 3.8, I accelerated quite hard onto a dual carriageway. After a few seconds there was a loud bang and I had no power steering. I managed to get to work (the steering is near to unmoveable when you are going slow) and closer inspection showed that all the belts bar the water pump had snapped/were missing. So I'd got no PAS, no alternator, no air pump and no air conditioning.

I purchased the relevant belts from my local BMW dealer (quite a bit less than £10 each as I remember), and a BMW Technician friend of mine fitted them at my house within 20 minutes. Not a major job. I think just one of the belts had snapped, and that took the others off..........

Had no belt problems on my 1995 6 speed yet......

All the best
Mark

The beast lives on!

Well I replaced these belts last night, and although it may be a 20 minuite job for a BMW technician, on a cold dark monday night in my front garden, I needed a couple of hours.

Still, not a difficult job, and one worth undertaking if you're unsure when your belts were last renewed.

The 3 belts came to under £25 in total BTW.

Cheers,
Bryn.

Yes, I'm sure I'd have taken more than 2 hours.......initially I wouldn't have been exactly sure which pulley had what belt on.

I suppose it gets easier when you are looking at it. I did have a picture of the front of an S38 engine out of the car from someones rebuild article. This showed the correct belt paths.

I would have needed that.

Pleased you got it sorted.

Kind Regards
Mark
