Options list for the M5

by: Paul De Witt | Created the 2002-01-01 03:45:35 (Updated the 2002-08-20 22:32:52)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lately some options have been discussed and this might help. Some of these were standard on the car, and the option was not to have them, but I will root those out and seperate later on.

You can get a build sheet for your car from a BMW dealer or even BMW M GmbH, if you can contact them. You might already have one, so here are a few of the numbers and what they mean.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

At the top of the sheet, it should read "Sonderasstuttng," which is German for "Special Equipment."

Under "Sonderasstuttng", there should be a list of numbers, and each car is different so if they are not here, contact me if you know them. NOTE: Some of these options are only for the M5 Touring, for example, the roof rack. ALSO: Your M5 might have some special equipment from BMW Individual, so the sheet should say that it is BMW Individual installed. BMW Individual parts do not have numbers that correlate.

216A- Servotronic steering assist.

235A- Anhaengerkupplung, Kopf abnehmbar- Trailer Hitch, removable head. M5 Touring.

240A- Lederlenkrad- Leather Steering Wheel

243A- Airbag Fuer Beifahrer- Airbag for front passengers

245A- Lenksaeulenverstellung Elektrisch- Electrical Steering Column Adjustment

302A- Alarmanlage- Alarm installation (don't know whether this is dealer installed or factory. Assume dealer, which has been the standard practice for BMW dealers for the past 10 years).

325A - Rear Spoiler

339A- Shadowline- Deletes the chrome around the sidewindows. Note that this was standard mid 1992<, and the option was to have chrome around the windows.

385A- Dachtrager-Laengsschienen- Roof rack (for tourings only)

401A Schiebe-Hebedach Elektrisch- Electric sunroof

417A- Sonnenschutzrollo Hintere Tuersch- Rear roll-out sun shades. This is for the both passengers on the rear (duh) and for the rear window.

423A- Fussmatten im Velours- Velour Floormats. There is an option to have the trunk lined in Velour.

428A- Warndreieck- Warning triangle added to tool kit in trunk.

431A- Innenspiegel Automatisch Abblenden- Automatic dipping rearview mirror. Note that this is not the sideview mirror that "tilts" down when the reverse gear is engaged so the person can see the curb. Option 431A is a mirror that self-adjusts at night to headlights that shine on the rearview mirror.

458A - Sitzverst.Elektr.Fahrer- Electrically adjustable front seats. Does not have the memory function.

459A- Sitzverst.Elektr.Fahrer Memory/Bei- Electically adjustable seats with memory function. Memory function allows for three different seat and mirror settings.

494A- Sitzheizung Fuer Fahrer/Beifahrer- Seat heating for front passengers.

500A- Scheinw.Wacshanl/Intensivreinigun- High-pressure headlight and foglight washers.

530A- Air Conditioning

528A- Automatische Umluft Controll (AUC)- Automatic circulating air Control, Automatic Ventilation system when car is parked

534A- Klimaautomatik- Automatic climate control when driving.

536A-Standheizung- Auxillary Heater, kind of like a block heater. Keeps the car heated when parked.

540A-Geschwindigkeitsregelung- Speed control

560A - Rear Seat Reading Lights

564A-Innenlichtpaket- Interior light package

571A- Increased Power Supply

640A- Autotelefonvorbereitung- Telephone capability

662*-BMW Bavaria C Professional RDS

672A- CD Wechsler Fuer 6 CDS- 6 Disc CD Changer

676A-HIFI Lautsprechersystem- HIFI Speaker System

686A- Antennendiversity- The diversity antenna in the rear window.

694A- CD Wechsler Vorbereitung- CD Changer capability

710A-M Lederlenkrad- M Leather Steeringwheel. This also includes the highly coveted "///M-stitching," which means the stitching is done in ///M colors. Only available 1993<. Cool, and just another perk of owning an M5.

781A - 9J x 17 Alloy Rear Wheels. Standard rear wheels on the M5 were 8Jx17.

782A- Nuerburgring-Fahrwerkspaket- Nurburgring Suspension. Available only mid 1992< and never available to the US.

784A-Aerodynamikspiegel- M Aerodynamic Mirrors.

786A Two Passenger Rear Seat- This makes the rear seat a two-seater by placing a console (aka "breadbin") between the two seats. This was standard until mid 1991. After that, it was an option. Very unique and seperates the M5 from the normal.

779A- Carbon Line

806A 3.Bremsleuchte- Third brake light. Fitted in the lower middle inside of the rear window. First mandated for US Spec M5s because of the DOT. Eventually Germany and other European countries had this installed.

812A - GB Specification. Only for UK destined M5s. The GB Specification includes right-hand drive, city driving lights, UK radio bands, and MPH Speedometer (strange, I thought the UK used metric measurements for length), and an English Manual.

985- US Radioergaenzungstatz- US Radio Specification

Thanks Ivan. (and also a few further questions )
Quote:
240A- Lederlenkrad- Leather Steering Wheel
This will be the "3-spoke" wheel, wich was only available in leather, right?
Quote:
417A- Sonnenschutzrollo Hintere Tuersch- Rear roll-out sun shades. This is for the both passengers on the rear (duh) and for the rear window.
For the rear side-windows also?
And there was both a electrical and a manuel version available for the rear window, right?

Quote:
564A-Innenlichtpaket- Interior light package
Any idea what was included in this exactly? (besides the rear readinglights, that i assume is part of this option).
Quote:
676A-HIFI Lautsprechersystem- HIFI Speaker System
How can one tell the difference from this and "normal" speakers?

Quote:
686A- Antennendiversity- The diversity antenna in the rear window.
All E34 M5's have this, no?

Correct. 240A is the 3 spoke steering wheel.

417A includes a total of 3 shades: Rear Right Passenger, Rear Left Passenger and Rear Window Shade. This just denotes manual for all three. I dont know the number for the automatic rear window shade.

564A no idea what is included. Possibly lights that dim rather than abruptly shut off.

676A no idea on the HIFI speakers, but you probably have them like any E34 that wasn't an absolute bargain-basement delivery.

686A, I have seen cars that have an antenna on the side of the trunk top. I dont know any further.

The list was just a development of what I could scrounge together from build sheets of M5s. Either it is true, or the best guess from good evidence.

In a Cartman voice: "Sweet!"

Thanks a ton for sharing those options Jimmy. Ill get them up as soon as possible.

I would be really interested to see what "850 Additional fuel" entails. I know on the Winkelhock edition of the M5, they had a smaller tank for weight savings. **** the E34 M5, too many options!

I got a list from the dealer today, showing what options was included when my car was build, and there is an addition to the FAQ list:
415A Sonnenschutzrollo fuer heckscheibe - Sunshade for rearwindow. (this is manual).
(apparantly not the same as "417A- Sonnenschutzrollo Hintere Tuersch- Rear roll-out sun shades. This is for the both passengers on the rear (duh) and for the rear window.").

And also there is 656 (no "A") BMW Bavaria C Proffesional - Im guessing this is a radio. (Apparantly not the same as "662*-BMW Bavaria C Professional RDS").

PS. Jimmy: thanks for sharing the list, but i dont think the E28 options list entirely apply to the E34 also, even if many codes are the same.

PPS. 240A, 428A, 686A & 786A are in my car, but not on the optionslist for my car, how strange is that? (i must guess that some owner have done theese changes).

factory options

whoops guys ! hold your horses !
do NOT mix up E28 + E34, concentrate on the E34 M5 only -
this is a 'mission impossible' as I told Paul at an early stage -
you don't give up Paul ? very determined ? well, you have my support and as I can see you gave me credits on FAQ-site, thanks
for the flowers - the confusion is complete, guys ! to get any order
into the chaos let define options by model-runs and then again
options were changed and new options introduced during the model run -

Silkesborg-Finn already noticed some -options- not being mentioned on the BMW-BTX-print (built-sheet) under
'Sonderausstattung' most likely and simply because they were
standards on his car model run -

the by far most discussed -option- are the (784) Aerodynamik-Spiegel/M-technique mirrors first introduced as standard factory
feature on the HD93 US-E34 model-year 1993 (incorrectly called M3-mirrors but the damage is done), they became an -option-
for the HC91/92 + HJ91-model run (the 3.8 Li/340 bhp M5)
BUT (to reasons unknown) NOT from the beginning but introduced as an option DURING the production run -
(pls note: M-technique-mirrors for the E34,E36 + E31 have
different spare-part-numbers)

Finn's question was = what was available as an option when his
car was born ? well, who is an expert on the HD92 12/89 -11/91
model run ??

what I can tell you is what the M-GmbH offered as -options-
at the time of the beginning of the E34 3.8 Li production run,
status 1/92 M-GmbH -
normal freaks have given up by now, here is for the remaining lot: P/Polster, Volleder, Komplettler, 785 -
G/F 216 incl in 782, 235, 240, 245, 781, 782 incl 216+781
A 302, 303, 320, 325, 339, 354, 355,
I 401, 415, 416, 423, 430, 459, 494, 496, 499, 786
E 500, 528, 529, 530, 534, 536, 540, 564, 577, 860
K 621, 627, 633, 634, 635, 637, 685,
R 657, 660, 661, 662, 659, 672, 676, 686, 690
F 490, 940
P numerous variations of interior details and others
all coded iunder 9990, 940, 944 codes, these are also
called 'Individual-codes' -
details for these are difficult to obtain for a specific car
BUT it is possible -
+ a few more for the M5touring only incl (404),
Doppel-Schiebe-Hebedach, elektr. = the double sun-roof

Paul, you don't give up, do you ?? well, 'happy hunting',
you know where to find me -

Karl! Glad you like the flowers

No way am I giving up....I should have been more specific with Jimmy, but I will be more specific with everybody: ONLY E34 M5 OPTIONS WILL BE POSTED IN THE FAQ! Jimmy, do you have a print out of your options? If so, could you possibly email it to me?

While there maybe correlations between the E28 and E34 in terms of options and their respective "code," it is not a true correlation throughout the entire option list! There are many many differences between the two. So enough talk about the E28...only E34 M5's here!

Precisely the case with "unmentioned" options. Those were standard options with respect to model/country model and year. Very complicated. Will discuss later

Karl, I just sent you an email regarding the "FAX."
