An S38 in a 525i...

I just want to say hello to all. I am not looking for people to flame.

I have a '93 525i and had an S38B36 intalled in it. Don't worry, I am not slapping an M5 sign on the back. I was actually looking into installing an M3 engine in it, but there was an M5 one available from a wreck . I just have a question. I know that Dinan uses their cam gear and chip together, but can I use a 3.8 cam gears and a chip together? I already have a D'Sylva chip.

Thanks,
Mark J

Hello, Mark

Welcome aboard! Interesting car you've got there, especially the part about it weighing less than an M5. Sorry I can't answer your question.

Well Thanks. Yeah, because of accessories like the servotronic, hydraulic suspension, A/C module for wide open throttle shut-off, and more, the total weight was calculated to be about 300lbs less. I would conservatively say that I am around 200-250lbs less because I did add the rear headrests, the brakes, and sound system(every little bit counts). Still not bad.

If people want to know, my ///M525i(hehe) is faster than my e39 540i 6spd. However, the 540i does have a real nice punch with its torque when tooling around town. I already have plans for the 540i, all naturally aspirated, and will probably get working on it during the spring of next year and probably taking me around 2 years. I need a brake upgrade first.

With some Dinan components, Bmw intake manifold from the non vanos 4.4L V8(it has larger intake runners than my vanos one), and exhaust (the cats here are very, very restrictive), the 540i will ultimately make around 350+hp with torque aaround 350+ft/lbs. Now if I could only find affordable headers. I am sure the power could reach 360+, still nowhere near 100hp/liter like the M engines.
