W211 E55 AMG V8 S/C Kleemann Headers complete Exhaust Thermo Wrap.

Hi,

First of all sorry for my many detailed pictures and also they are not in order but did not patient to put them in order. You get the idea...

ok ok ok its not E34 M5 but worth to look at least for those who are interest in performance Thermo wrap.

Well, my other passion as well is Mercedes-Benz I like to work on them a lot and its fun. I am more oriented on the old models as I restored many but the new are board...

This customer is crazy and its a close friend of mine who wanted to do complete exhaust wrap. To be honest I have never ever seen someone to do complete exhaust but I like crazy customers.. These days in Los Angeles is 45-47 Celsius under the sun in valley area just nasty...

Please pay attention on the primary header the diameter. Much smaller than our BMW Motorsport headers, M88/3 headers.

After installation I took the car for a test drive and I drove it like a BMW M and the temp raised very shortly to 100C constant came back and measured the Engine Bay temp and as you can see its about ~73-85 Celsius and that is after I drove the car like I stole it. I am able to touch the headers with fingers if not wrap my finger will be tamped at the headers as a signature.

My other friend just purchased E60 530i and we measured his bay temp and it appeared to be ~120 Celsius. Bear in Mind that I drove the E55 AMG as I stole it 1 min ago...Not only that but its Forced induction engine and its V8 compare to the N/A N54 TU engine.

I must say that I am absolute amazed from the power...No a while ago he installed a Custom Flash, Custom intercooler, delete second cat and full exhaust...

I will see when I am done with my S62 swap into one of the many E24 M6's I own... Will see how it will stand up against the E55, with 3.91 diff gear...I know the E55 will kill my try but I want to give him Sweat !

Next upgrade to the E55 AMG will be shorter differential. Current its 2.82 if I do remember correctly..On 2nd gear is red lined at about 80mph waaaaay to long !

I am thinking something like 3.27 or 3.4X and then will be dangerous to drive...

Enjoy

Anri

Interesting. Is the goal to reduce overall temps to increase performance? It's not a bad idea for our V10s. Not sure if there is much real gains.

Yes, the main goal is to reduce the Bay temp. I did not see a reason to wrap the entire exhaust but the guy was complaining that on a open window at the traffic light there was a lot of heat coming from the exhaust underneath the car. I drove the car and appear what exactly he was complaining.

He increased the engine temp after installed Flash, long tube headers with thin walls, exhaust on top of everything Mercedes engines likes to run hot etc...

For sure their is gain in therms of heat. Performance wise HP gain I dont think so. At the end he was kind of disappointed from the outcome result but ones he sow the laser gun on in comparison of a regular E60 N54 bay temp. then he got happy.

Do not expect to install this and open the hood and put a cup of nice "Gelato" Ice-cream and do bite by bite and not to melt...

Off topic:
I see under your profile that you own V10 M5. We dyonoed the AMG at about ~45X RWHP and similar in torque can not give you exact spec since it was 6moths+ago.

Your S85 V10 is making about the same power 507HP but not as neaaaarly the torque of the AMG. I drove an S85 M6 last week and I tell you the car does not move in comparison to this AMG torque monster... No wander why at particular Races and competitions they have restriction in Torque... This is the perfect example of 2 engines that makes the almost exact power...

As I always say, Torque wins races ! HP sells the car....

Exhaust wrap is really good for performance. It's excellent because it traps the heat in the exhaust gases and so they move faster through the exhaust. you'll probably find that if you hold your hand near the tail pipe, the gas coming out is still really hot! a lot hotter than an unwrapped car. Trapping the heat also reduces under-hood temperatures, which decreases intake temp etc. Trapping the heat also (and this is the bad one) fatigues the metal and can cause headers to crack - particularly areound welds because the natural heat-up / cool-down cycle of the headers is affected. Also the wrap tends to trap moisture in. hot moisture = corrosion.

Small OT

i agree with Anri,, about the M113 S/C engine,, it is a real torque beast,,

A friend of mine owns a SL 55 with Carlsson upgrade .. and i have never driven a car that have so much grunt,, IMO it is to much on low revs.. to lunch that car off the line and get a great start ,, is almost impossible..

and not to a surprice.. this SL 55 is by far ,, the best overall car i have driven ,,

drives so well.. great looks and ,, the top down on sunny days,, and all the performance you need,,

and to my big surprice.. when he owned the E60 M5 at the same time,, the S85 used a lot more fuel on daily driving

Did you get an increase in water temperature with the header wrap ?

I tried a header insulation wrap on one of my competition jeeps and it didn't work, my water temp increased after some driving to higher than normal even though under hood temps did decrease (you could touch metal components without getting burnt), I ended up taking the header wrap off and putting vent holes in the hood of the engine bay which did work , decreased water temp and under hood temps.
