Rescued GE00108

Hello all
Just thought I would share my recent project. Earlier this year I acquired rolling chassis GE00108 which I decided to restore to its former glory for myself to keep. I have fitted very low mileage running gear, replaced all the suspension and brakes. I have replaced most consumables and have tried to use all the best condition parts I could find. There are still some things to do to it but it is now back on the road.

Details of my progress can be found here:

Unfortunately it has developed a misfire that I cant trace but hopefully I can limp it to a diagnostic machine next week.

Just read the thread and great job and a lot of very nice touches! Good luck with diagnosing the misfire, has it been there from the start or did it come along after? A couple of check you can do are the earth straps to the block and body, aso the cabling to the coil packs where it goes under the top casing have ben known to chaf, good luck

Thank you.
Steve. The engine was running fine till I serviced the engine (plugs too) and fitted the gearbox. So I am a bit stumped

Hi Richard

Looks like you've done a great job. I would love a really nice 5 speed Avus 3.8, I'm very envious!

I agree with Steve about the wiring to the coil packs, the wiring in the engine bay gets quite brittle after nearly 20yrs of heating up and cooling down, if it ran well before changing the plugs it would be the first thing I'd look at. I've spent a fair amount of time doing wiring repairs myself this weekend.

Now of course you have the joy of driving a sorted E34, something that is well worth the wait and all the hard work/cash.

I'm assuming the plugs are the correct Bosch ones?

Another thought is there a sensor on the flywheel been disturbed after the gearbox going in or a problem with the flywheel now it has a load??

The plugs are right and I will check the wires. My E39 had a flywheel sensor but I am not sure if an E34 does?

Fantastic restoration and welcome to the forum!

Glad you decided to keep it pretty OEM.

Thanks lantz

I have checked the coil wires and they seem good. Pulling the coil wires individually (1 closest to the front), it makes no difference to the running of the engine when cylinders 3, 4 & 6 are disconnected.
