Time to replace the tires on my E34 M5 , recommendations ?

Hi everyone ,

I've only been on the board and sucking up a lot of information during a steep learning curve after 4 days of M5 ownership.

My M5 has been sitting for 12 years (driven 100 or 200kms) a year and I want to put some new tires on as I don't like the condition of the existing tires.

I want to go 10mm wider than standard front and rear.

I'm currently considering Toyo or Yokohama tires as these seem to be the best priced alternatives available locally but I have an open mind on the subject.

What works on your M5 ? Experiences on the good , bad and the ugly would be appreciated.

What brands to stay away from ?

Best regards

Tony

S781A LM Rad 9Jx17 auf Hinterachse BMW LA wheel M Kontur

I have the larger 9J rims on the rear so what is the standard tyre size for these ?

I just read that for the 9J 255/40 ZR17 ?

I was thinking to go 235/45 ZR17 on the front and 255/40 ZR17 on the rear , what's the widest on the rear possible without rubbing and 9J rims ?

I don't want the tires rubbing or having to do body mods

Just stick to these sizes or the car will loose it's "tightness".
I would opt for the Yokohamas. I have had a bad experience with Toyo. The quality control on them were terrible because it had loads of radial runout

I'm going with 235/45 ZR17 on the front and 255/40 ZR17 on the rear

The E34 M5 I saw at the BMW workshop yesterday had 255 front and 285 rear on 18" BBS rims , to be honest it looked a bit too much

With 285s on the rear I would be surprised if the fenders aren't rolled. I run a 265 on an 18" rim at the back and it is very tight.

However in my opinion, these cars handle best on original 17" rims and standard tyre sizes.

The Michelin PS2s get a lot of praise on this forum and the general consesus is that they are the best tyre for the E34 M5. Personally I run Pirelli Rossos and am very happy with them. Just make sure that you choose a tyre with sufficient side wall strenght suited to a heavier car - it is my understanding that Toyos generally fall short here as they are primarly designed for lighter japanese cars.

Welcome to the forum btw!

Thanks Lantz , at the moment I have the Yokohamas as front runners but I'll check the prices on the Michelin PS2s as well , new tires going on next week.

I've heard some bad things about the Toyos , both on this forum and locally , they seem to have good and bad batches of tires.

For spirited street and track driving, my first choice
Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08

They grip and hold better than any tires I've tried.

After talking to a few BMW owners here in Jakarta they said the quality control of the performance sizes of the Toyos have been ok with them , no wobbles or run out.

I have some Toyo T1R going on tomorrow 235/45-17 (8J rims) on the front and 255/40-17 (9J rims) on the rear
