Also in 12 yrs I've never seen an E34 M5 in Indonesia before I bought this one , I knew there were some around but never seen one .

I have seen some of the later M3 , M5 and M6 on the road but only in the last few years, I guess after the 1998 Asian financial crisis it took nearly 10 years for the country to recover
I did see some being transported, but I also saw an f430 in Jakarta traffic! I couldn't believe my eyes! The f430 was about 4 cars up, which you know, is an ocean away in terms of trying to catch up. I also noticed a bunch of mis-badged (fake) AMGs and BMWs. We saw a ton in Bali -- all with Jakarta plates.

The new toll road to Bandung is awesome at 3am -- after the trucks have thinned out. We have an ancestorial home in the mountains in Cisalak. When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, the drive up in my grandfathers VW Bus took "days". The toll road has made things easier to get to Cisalak -- if you time it right.

BTW...every time I'm back in Indo, my relatives and their friends try to "bribe" me with job offers to go ex-pat. These are some of my old clients that I helped avert the melt down in 1998. Always tempting...

That's exactly where I want to try a top speed run

You're better off living out of the country and visiting regularly so you can appreciate the good things about Indo but not get bogged down with the daily bad (traffic, corruption, things taking so long)

Ok, I'm definitely emotionally attached to the M5

I was offered a 2011 320i sedan for a straight swap for the M5 from an Italian expat at my local bar aand I turned it down , if it was an aircraft I wouldn't have thought twice

Even though the trade is 2.5 times what I paid for the M5 I can't easily replace it with another.

I've promised my 320 friend that when I find another M5 I will let him know.

I think 25% of BMWs in Jakarta are M badged , there must be a great trade in badges for the dealers and parts stores

I'm running 10 over front and rear, with a staggered setup, but I've got Alpina wheels which are 9.5j rear...

ie 245 /45 front
265/40 rear

Personally I love the staggered setup, but having driven other E34 M5's with 235 all round that it's quite different feel
- 235 feels quite neutral - you steer the car and gently balance it with the throttle, and it responds evenly until the limit is reached, at which point beware.

- oversized and staggered feels more like race setup (to me) - ie encourages and allows me to provoke reactions, and is more point and squirt

CAREFUL!

VERY careful.

I wouldn't attempt anything (much) above 5000 rpm in 5th until you've had the valve clearances checked, and, are happy that you have no blockages in the cooling system / oil ways.

I know you have a spare engine, but, it would be a shame to have to fit it so soon, and, destroy such a low mileage engine.

other new owners on here have fallen foul of the temptation to find the 155mph limiter before ensuring everything's working well / to spec'.

and welcome :-)

Hi mate!

nice to see another clean example below the equator with the steering wheel on the "wrong" side

I can answer a few of your questions.

first of all, S823A Hot climate pack (as someone has already mentioned) is a low compression engine variant for tropical climate. the compression is 9.2:1 instead of the normal 10:1. You also have a high-flow tropical water pump fitted. Not sure what the exact power difference is though.

8. Upgrade the stereo system head , the original Blaupunkt has a dead display and the speakers may need to be replaced as well , I want something compatible with an iPhone or iPod , I will keep the original radio for future generations that may want to restore the car after I'm gone (I'm 50 now)

Stereo is a very subjective, opinion based thing but for what it's worth I have a Kenwood KDC X8016BT headunit. I like it because it has all the ipod/MP3/USB functionality, as well as bluetooth. also it is nice and plain black looking and best of all, all the displays are colour adjustable so the amber colour matches the rest of the cockpit illumination perfectly.

11. Find out why the Brake Lining warning is coming on (only when I turn the ignition on or off) , the PO 'said' he put new brake linings in.

The brake linings may well have been replaced. there is a little sensor which needs to be replaced along with them (if they were low enough to activate it. There's one in the front: 34 35 1 180 432 and one in the back: 34 35 1 179 820 you may only need to replace one of them.

12. Clean the boot carpet and replace some of the missing tools in the toolkit (about half are still there)

The tools in my kit (and it seems complete) are:
combination 8/10 spanner
combination 12/13 spanner
combination 17/19 spanner
combination 10/11 box spanner
water pump pliers
tow-ring
wheel aligning tool
spark-plug box spanner
flippable flat/philips screwdriver
hex key for manual sunroof opening
warning triangle
2xkeys for wheel locknuts

once again, welcome

Great post Pete , some good info there.

I'd like to see your M5 next time I'm in Oz , as I'll be going to Brisbane / Bris Vegas as part of the trip later this year

That sounds like what I'm looking for , a modern unit that won't look like a rice racer boom box , something that can 'look' like it was put in by the factory
