Thank you to share with us this nice picture.

Matheus,

Took some pics for all of us S38 board members hear: M88/3, S38-B36-B38, S54-B32 Headers comparison.

Hope this will help little bit and give you an idea to improve passos headers decision/choice.

Regards
Anri

Itīs GrandRoyal M3 E30!

I will convince he to open a thread here with his car and with some vids.

The basic spec is S14 converted to EVO 2.5 liters using special forging lightweight and balanced (within 0,5g in the set) pistons, OEM BMW Motorsport 87mm stroke crankshaft, i made special stage 3 headwork (changed valves, seat troat flow keeping port speed..decreased valvetrain mass and spring pressure corrected to work up to 9.000rpm without floating..), with inlet ports matching the Sport EVO 48mm Throttle bodies that he is also using.
The injectors are also replaced for higher flow (also to renew the old parts that with time loose tightness sealing between dwell time), but keeping spray angle and efficiency.

The engine is just in the initial step of mods. Itīs running in OEM Motronic keeping the AFM load setup. I did the engine calibration in the OEM Motronic, correcting the air/fuel ratio for new VE and also ignition timming. But is a very old and limited ECU (that even if we convert the AFM load type to new MAF type, will be limited in other areas... even if convert to Alpha-N in OEM Motronic that i also possible), so, i requested to GrandRoyal change to MoTec, then, i will can do a perfect engine calibration that this engine deserves.

Nothing changed on the mechanics yet, unless the slick tyres (235x18 and 265x18)....
I have already got a pair of M88 headers to me slightly modified for my use, and some other stuf that I had mentioned before in this same thread....

What sort of modifications did you have to make to get the M88 headers to fit?

What you mean by "improving"?

Itīs depends of your target.
Itīs the common error of exhaust manifold and exhaust downpipes setup decision. "Default" manifolds, downpipes and mufflers, usually, are made for average owners, that have standard engines and are looking for some additional power in top end, but never loose low and mid-range. So, itīs very hard to happen. Usually, these default manifolds with low diameter in primary pipes, just increase power in mid-range and some cases decrease power in top end. But, common customers will think that now have more power (the feeling of strong mid-range can mess the final power gain and the average power gain). Depending on the target, is not wrong. If you use your car more in mid-rage rpm, is better a exhaust manifold that delivery to you power in this range.

So, if i sell to you a Race exhaust manifold with big diameter primary pipes and you have a standard S38, you donīt will like the result. Will say that manifold decreased your power than increase.

But, for Passos engine, we will use a exhaust manifold that decrease exhaust port restriction in higher rev, to combine with special engine head that i made and the special high duration/lift/overlap camshafts.

We donīt will use M88/3 by factory, itīs will be modified, and for our application, yes, itīs a improvement.

There is no global answer for this question, itīs depends of your project and target. In high specific power output engines, everything is a trade-off. Is very difficult to have a "gain-gain" mod.
