How To Guide: Replace airbag steering wheel with mtech 1 wheel

Hey guys,

Thought someone might be interested in seeing what an Mtech1 steering wheel looks like in our M5's

Here is a great walk through of how to do it on an e30 (props to ciz28 of e30tech.com):

How To Guide: Replace airbag steering wheel with non-airbag wheel - e30tech.com Forums

Here are some pics of my car with the Mtech 1 installed:

You'll have to add a step though when doing this on an E34.

The E34 air bag steering wheels have an SRS contact reel which E30's don't seem to have.

"The contact reel is a wound spoil of wire that ensures continuos electrical contact for the airbag unit" (according to the Bentley Manual)

There is an extra connecter connected to the wheel for this. You'll have to remove the lower steering column case and unplug the orange connecter.

Also, it's a bit more difficult to unplug the SRS system.

You'll need to remove the upper and lower knee bolsters. You'll see 3 more orange connecter. One by it self closer to the steering wheel and 2 more grouped together further back behind the orange SRS system box. You'll need to disconnect the smaller connection of the grouped set.

This will bypass the SRS system and the car won't flash a red SRS error light on your gauge cluster.

The Mtech 1 was a tight fit on my car. I greased everything down pretty well but did have to tap it on with a rubber mallet.

The Mtech 1 will not sit completely flush with the steering column as the horn engage pin is longer (so don't smack it too hard with the mallet or you might break off the pin):

If you follow the steps form e30tech your horn should work and everything.

If anyone is interested I have one extra Mtech 1 wheel. It's not perfect but will get you the look. Shot me a PM if you'd like to buy it off of me.

Also, if anyone needs an airbag wheel I now have one of those too, haha...

Thanks

Just a friendly reminder to check with your insurance carrier before modifying/deleting the SRS system. Some of them won't pay a nickle if you wreck the car and anyone inside is injured. State laws are all different in regards to liability but I wouldn't want to give an ambitious lawyer any angle at all.

Don't forget to remove the index pin at the top of the column, or it will rub

It's not perfect but still pretty nice.

It has a small piece of leather missing at the top of the wheel. But all the threads are good and the rest of the leather is really nice.

I'd like $65 shipped to you in WA.

I'll email you pics tomorrow.

I'm in the process of pulling the airbag wheel out of my '95 S6 and replacing it with one I had recovered a while back. The airbag is removed and everything is unbolted. I'm stuck because the connectors from the main airbag wiring harness that go through the wheel don't seem to fit through the back of the hole at the back of the wheel (on the mounting plate of the steering wheel).

I know it's a different design, but wondering if you had an issue when removing the old airbag wheel and what you did to get them through. The connector seems to big for the hole and doesn't want to budge.

Any advice appreciated.

Nevermind. Just found the airbag connector plugs underneath the steering column. The wires stay with the wheel.
