does anyone know if you need a special power steering fluid for 91 M5 - says on cap to use something no one at auto store had heard of - what is potential damage of using same as 535i?

Well, you'll have to go to the dealership. If you use another type of power steering fluid there's a good chance your rear shocks will start to leak. The power steering fluid is also the fluid that feeds the rear self leveling suspension. The rear shocks for the earlier 3.6s are selling for about $1,000 US, so it is fairly important to use the CHF 7.1 fluid. I wish I had the part number for you, but it's at home. I hope I've been of some assistance.

Steven is correct, use a Pentosin 7.1 or a CHF 7.1 fluid. Both are the same. Your dealer will have it.

Thanks for the help. I have a Dinan Stage II with the self-leveling removed, but no need to take chances.
