Engine bay paint browning....

Hi all. I'm looking at a 91 M5 that seems to be in great shape. One thing is turning me off a bit and making me think twice about it. The car is alpine white. On the outside it looks great, but under the hood the paint looks browned in a lot of areas almost a tan/beige hue. Is this common on the e34's that are alpine white? It may just be from engine heat and age but I wanted to ask around before assuming anything. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

You sure it's not Cosmoline, the spray on protectant BMW sprays all over the engine-bay to protect from corrosion etc? it'd be most noticable on the intake plenum and strut towers

Welcome to the forum!
It's most definitely cosmoline; a wax like product that BMW smothered all over our engines when they were new. With age and heat it tends to turn a yellow/brown. Normal? Yes, Ugly? Yes, A Problem? No

It can be removed, however the job is time consuming and involves quite a bit of sanding.

Hope this helps.

if it's cosmoline (probably is) you can also use solvent, and much labor (and maybe a pressure washer) to remove it. I worked at a bmw dealership's detail shop while i was in college (and these cars were new) and we usually removed most of it on the m cars and showroom bound cars.

If it's actually the paint (i.e. it feels smooth, not rough or sticky), i'd try a mild rubbing/polishing compound to see if it cleans up the paint.
