Some reminiscing and questions about Tourings

First some preamble:

As one who recently listed my e34 saloon for sale and has rarely posted, I thought I should de-lurk a bit. I've thoroughly enjoyed my car for the last 2 and half years. It's reliable and deeply satisfying to drive. Furthermore, having recently tried out a 2005 530, it is still remarkably refined. The throttle response, handling, and understated looks make me look forward to driving to work each day.And I always anticipate my infrequent trips through the Rocky Mountains. I've taken other decent cars for spirited drives in the Rockies and on twisty roads (a mercedes 500SL; a newer Acura TL), but neither delivers even half the experience of the M5. The car really gets in your blood.

My favourite memory was at a summer wedding at the base of a ski hill (Kicking Horse Mountain). The road leading to the resort was ideal - rolling, winding, beautiful sweepers insterspersed with hairpin corners. On the way up, we were behind a caravan of RVs and I lamented how disappointing it was to have to drive 30km/h on such a delightful road. The next morning, the wedding party realized that they had forgotten to bring coffee to the chalet. I volunteered to pick some up in the town below. At 7am, the road was abandoned, the sunlight was beautiful, and the drive was one of those you replay over and over in your mind. I volunteered to get fresh coffee every morning. The car is a work of art.

But the family is growing. And hauling all the associated kid stuff just doesn't work in a saloon. So I started thinking about M5 Tourings.

So my question is this - has anyone used a touring for intermittent family-type duties? Not as a daily driver, but for schlepping the kids to their relatives 10 hours away, or taking the odd trip down the highway for a weekend holiday? Is the cargo space sufficient? Are they safe? Is the rear seating the same as the Saloon?

Thanks,
Dan

Dan Hi,

You can't go wrong with the M5 Touring !

Though I don't use my car for general family duties, the times I do it becomes a massive event !

My children...most especially my daughter just adore the car and its double sunroof.......the other day I had guests spending the night and only the M5 was available for taking the kids to school. I've had the car for about 2 years and this was the second time they've gone to school in it. Being as it was a very cool morning I opened up the sunroof and haven't heard the end of it since. Every morning its..." Daddy can we go in your station wagon ?"......"of course not,my dears, I only used it that day because your aunt and uncle were around !" The car is a gem...even the kids know it !

Load lugging ability is more than adequate....at least for me it is. Once had to buy a washing machine for my parents who live about 140km away from me. What else to do other than bring out the M5 ! It was a wonderful trip and the car just swallowed the machine up....no fuss whatsoever .

Sure you're bound to hear more noise in it than in the sedan and its also has more weight which makes it harder on suspension components but thats about it....well as far as i'm concerned.

If used as a weekend car and for intermittent family duties...just as I use mine....then you're in for a wonderful ownership experience.

Cheers

Erik

The VIN is BL01862. Very, very nice looking touring with a very rare interior!

The engine has about 75K km on it. One would have to get a full inspection to know how good it was. There were at least two owners. He was offering it for sale at about $30,000CAD which is a little steep when you have to add in intercontinental shipping.

Is that a Japanese Dealer Market vehicle (JDM)?

Nice. The touring will meet or exceed all of your growing family issues while still satisfying your M requirements.

30,000 CAD, whats that in EUR? 15000 or 16000? If so, it sounds cheap to me. I could kill to get my hands on that one! What a rare collectible!!
I would readily pay 20.000 EUR or more for such an example in original condition, but now I am stuck with 3 E34 M5s already, so lets hope it comes up for sale in the future

I wouldn't use that particular car for too much daily driving. Connolly leather (the car has a special one of a kind two tone complete leather in dark blue and Magnolia) is not available anymore if something goes wrong. Too rare car for that I think. One with normal black nappa would be more suitable.

I have another question, how on earth did you even find this car for sale? Do you regularly browse the JDM market for e34's?

Also, is Connolly leather that much better than Nappa and is Nappa no longer available? I have bought some used seats to get the heaters and switches from them and I would like to cover the armrests with Nappa Blue leather to match my sport seats. Where would I find a yard or two of the Nappa Blue?

I wish someone could download all of those pics from the JDM site and host all those in here. That is a wild combination with sport seats and armrests and rear pouches...those rear headrests are wild.

I also think the rarity and mileage can validate the price if everything checks out. I would certainly need to pull the instrument panel to verify the coding plug...I was quoted mileage like that when I fell for my Elekta, and the coding plug was tampered with so we'll neva know.
