I think we should hold judgement on the new one until it has been properly tested, because just as the article says there has not been a bad M5 yet.
Slightly off topic but....
For years I was a big fan of naturally aspirated cars hence my love of anything with an M badge, prior to the move to BMW I had owned two VTEC powered Hondas long before VTEC and Type R became household names. A '91 Civic 1.6 VT and a '92 CRX VTEC both were bought new and they were amazing. In my opinion Honda and BMW were the leaders in producing high output NA engines ie 100 plus bhp per litre and both had resisted the temptation to go down the turbo route until very recently, case in point for BMW being the 335i. And the 335i is truly awesome and that is why I bought one after thinking long and hard about it. I looked at a new M3 but as they don't do M3 Tourings I went for what I think is the next best thing and so far after 5 months of ownership I have not been disappointed, the only minor criticism if I am being picky is the fuel tank which at 63 litres is a little small compared to the E34's 95 litre one. I don't love it as much as I do the E34 but it is a different animal and it was bought for a different reason.
The thing is as much as I think we would all love the new M5 to be a naturally aspirated monster, if it was it wouldn't compete with the latest Rs6 or whatever the top Merc is (E6?).
Look on the bright side, at least it won't be a diesel!!!!!!
