6 Speed with a 3.91 Diff

Part one of my latest list of jobs is complete and I must say that this has transformed the car!!!

After the last 18-24 months of a slowly dying 5 speed box, this has now been transformed with the implantation of a 6 speed and what a difference this has made. It isn't just the box though, it is the combination of that and the big diff which brings the character out in this car, it is just begging to be driven like a hooligan!!
Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of driving a 'standard' six speeder (with the 3.23 diff) so I can't pass comment on how they would compare against each other, however I am sure that the new combination I have is nearly perfect for this car.
I was originally under the impression that 6th would have been like an 'overdrive' however 6th is the same as where 5th was on the old box - at 4000 rpm on the old box in 5th that equated to 95-100 MPH, the same rpm in 6th on the newer box it is a tiny bit under if anything at all. If it has lost a bit of top end it has certainly made up for it in acceleration which is breathtaking. After a long drive back to Germany from the UK yesterday I could not stretch her legs fully as the traffic was awful - plus the wife was following in the 335. I will obviously see if there is any difference at the top but to be honest I don't ever spend hours and hours at 175 mph so if it has lost a bit of top speed it has more than made up for it in other areas.

Next jobs on the list are (in no particular order):

New springs/shocks and EDC delete.
Bigger brake conversion.
New exhaust (possibly Supersprint however suggestions would be greatly appreciated from those that have changed exhausts).

A big thanks to David at Classic MD Autos for supplying the box and getting the car back to me on time.

Thanks for the mention Rick .

Your M5 was a real pleasure to work on and a joy to drive ........

The 3.91 diff combined with the 6 speed box certainly improves certain aspects of the M5's driving characteristics , as does the 3.6 flywheel fitted to the 3.8 engine ..... which is another modification that I have carried out recently with great results !

I hope that you continue to enjoy your M5 !
