Ugh, starved for fuel

My M5T won't idle, and now won't start. I drove the kids to school this am at 7:30, and it was perfect. Up to temp and blasted to work. Just went downstairs 11am to make a post office run and it idled like it was out of gas, and then died. WTF? Could it be the new ethanol we have in Austin now? This is my second tank of the stuff and I buy my gas from the same station everytime...93 premium, but honestly, I have had zero issues with this car/engine for nearly three years. ZERO.

clogged fuel pickup? how do I check that? I'v scoured for a loose vacuum hose or something disco'd. Do fuel pumps crap out just like that? If you had bad gas, wouldn't I have noticed already...it's been 75 miles since last fill up?

Any trouble shooting ideas before I call AAA? Where do I look first?

Any help is greatly appreciated asap. About to be stuck at the office

where is the fuel pump so I could give it a little tap. Is it under the seat driver's side like in a sedan or would it be under the jack/hitch tray in the back..just forward of the spare?

I thought it was in the tank, like where a fuel level sending unit would be in an american truck or something.

Fuel pump is in the rear under the jack tray. It sits inside the fuel tank together with the sending unit.

Don't know what could have caused your problem though.......happened to me once in my 535i...turned out to be water in the fuel and a substandard fuel filter.

Cheers

get a rubber mallet or something and bang on the gas tank (just in from the rear bumper). When the fuel pump in my old 525ita died on me, it was sudden, driving along on the highway, engine died, coasted to a stop. Gave the tank a few wacks with the lug wrench (nothing else on hand) and the car started. Situation repeated several times, but the 'bang on the tank' trick got me to a safer spot than the side of the highway.

Thanks, I did bang on the tank with my fist inside my washer mitt a few times and no worky, so it's on the flat bed and headed to Sayther's shop where one of the pirates will have a look at it. I guess it's time to put the new roof rails on and a few other parts I have laying around...if I have to wait for a fuel pump to come in the mail..

? Can a US M5 fuel pump fit on a Euro spec M5T, or am I looking at a wait for a S38B38 fuel pump?

Ok, that was quick, report is in and here is the question. Rafa at TerrySaytherAuto says the fuel pump tests out ok. He's got voltage at the relay upfront at cranking but not at the pump itself. Is there a second relay, or is he going to have to trace the purple/green wire all the way to the back to find a break?

Does anyone have a wiring spec for the MY95 S38B38? Is the M5T any different from a US spec M5? Are there wiring schematics available online? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can also reach me at ggil at texas dot net.

I guess I will bug (pm) Farrell too.

What a fu*cking mind fu*k. (pardonmyfrench) It was the fuse. Put a new one in and it started right up...no bill!

The mech on the left side of the hood said to the mech on the right side of the hood, check the fuse to see if it's blown. Guy on the right side of the hood say to the guy on the left, it's fine.

So I spend 35 hours wracked with guilt over about to be spent untold $$$, and all the unknowns of a worried parent in the ER. Worse than that, I had a dream I didn't have it to drive anymore, I went thru at least ten different shifting and downshifting turns, sweepers, approaches and dive-ins in my head...all with sound and g forces all while I was asleep. Worse than that, I was actually irritated by my 57 chevy pickup (no power steering, clunky and with a TH400 vintage hurst shifter,) which I absolutely adore...that I've had to drive in a downpour instead (major fogged windsheild).

So when I was informed of the big fake-out at 4pm today, a zen missed near de*th calm came over me. It was then that I realized I am hopelessly addicted to my wagon. My child was safe..I knew it all along I said to myself....I am certifiable what with the trailer project, but at least I read that someone's making a B10 Touring...so I know that I am not totally alone...I'm like freaking Dreyfus in Close Encounters making a volcano mountain in his kitchen with mud and paper sacks.

I am pitiful, but I am also extremely lucky to get so much from this stealthy little wagon. The world is a strange place in the approach to Hallow's eve...and just to keep it weird I am going to finish this bottle of Broker's Gin because I found a jar of tipsy cocktail onions on the door of my fridge when I came home and moved all the cars around to put my sweet gem in it's rightful spot....yep, and I haven't tasted from this bottle in years.

"purt near perfect' day as they say. oh and my 7 year old lost one his bigguns upfront today, and the tooth fairy is going to be fruitful tonight

god bless all things M5T
